TNB will reimburse you if you were affected by power outage

On Wednesday at 12:39pm, a freak power outage caused much of Peninsular Malaysia to be without electricity, disrupting businesses, traffic lights, Internet and cellular connectivity, rail services and even our biggest airport.

The blackout, which lasted for more than a couple of hours, undoubtedly had a big impact, especially on businesses that lost revenue during that period. Fortunately, you will be reimbursed by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) if you were affected by the outage, said Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.

According to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA), around one million domestic, industrial and commercial accounts had their power supply interrupted on Wednesday, and these customers can apply for a rebate. “The affected account users, such as traders, can submit claims by stating the amount of losses they suffered,” said Takiyuddin. “However, I will table the detailed information on the rebate in Parliament on August 4.”

The minister applauded TNB for quickly restoring power supply, which took two hours and 21 minutes. “Because of what happened that day, we had to maintain energy stability and are forced to ration supply to certain areas that are not critical,” he said. “At the same time, we ensured that hospitals, airports and the Parliament sitting at that time did not experience any disruption.”

The outage, TNB said, was attributed to an equipment failure at the Yong Peng North Transmission Main Intake (PMU Yong Peng) station in Johor. This let to a 2.2GW loss in electricity, affecting up to 10% of the power supply in Peninsular Malaysia. Power was restored in some areas as early as 20 minutes after it went down, and the issue was fully resolved by 3:02pm.
