Huawei might follow Apple’s footsteps to sell phones without a charger

Apple’s decision to sell their iPhone 12 series without chargers and EarPods seemed to cause a ripple effect. Samsung is looking into doing the same thing, and now Huawei appears to be considering to follow suit—as a new report suggests its future products also won’t come with chargers.

In a new survey conducted by Huawei, the company asked consumers if they think it’s necessary that a wireless headset box includes a Type-C Charging cable. They also asked if the omission of the Type-C charging cable would affect purchase decisions.

While the Huawei’s questions never mentioned phones, it appears to be taking the same route as Apple to prepare its users for the upcoming changes. Apple first sent out surveys to find out what people do with their old chargers, before eliminating charging bricks and wired earphones from the iPhone box.

Huawei has recently released FreeBuds Studio, Huawei’s first over-ear headphones. The headphones still come with a USB-C charging cable. Although the survey didn’t mention power adapters specifically, the consideration of excluding the cable itself is an indication that Huawei is considering to cut down on the number of bundled accessories. It wouldn’t make sense to include a power adapter if a cable is not included.

Unlike Apple and Samsung which uses a universally accepted USB-PD standard, Huawei uses its own proprietary SuperCharge technology to fast charge their phones. The move to exclude a charger would certainly be trickier due to its proprietary charging standard.

According to Apple, their decision to get rid of EarPods and chargers int heir packaging was for the sake of the environment. However, there is no denying that it also helped the company cut costs and generate more revenue. It was also reported that removing the earphones from the box helped boost sales of Apple’s Airpods.

Apple’s excuse of trying to be more environment-friendly also weren’t apparent in France. Apple inserted a box with its EarPods at the bottom of the box that contains the smartphone—creating even more waste in its packaging.
