Meta AI is typically found embedded as an in-app chatbot within WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, or accessed as a web application.

Now, Meta is going beyond its mobile and web roots with the introduction of its first dedicated desktop application, currently available exclusively for Mac.

The standalone app signifies a clear push to turn Meta’s assistant into a practical productivity tool for small business owners, creators, and social media managers.

It also places Meta in direct competition with desktop AI clients from OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, leaning heavily on its deep integration with the Meta ecosystem to stand out in a crowded field.

Native Mac build with system-wide integration

Unlike ported iPad apps or resource-heavy Electron wrappers, Meta AI on Mac is a native build constructed with AppKit, SwiftUI, and WebKit.

Downloadable directly from the Meta AI website, the version 1.0 beta app weighs just 16MB and natively supports Apple silicon Macs running macOS 15 or higher. At present, Meta has not announced any plans or release timeline for a Windows version.

The application introduces several desktop-specific features designed for multitasking. Pressing Option-Space triggers a compact Quick Invoke window over active desktop tasks.

A global dictation tool allows users to hold a shortcut and speak directly into any application on macOS, from email clients to code editors.

Meta AI can also gather context from active desktop windows. By granting accessibility and screen recording permissions, users can point the assistant at a specific application window, allowing Meta AI to scan visible text and capture screenshots to deliver tailored advice.

The app features a dedicated sidebar for media, saved artifacts, scheduled tasks, and conversation history, alongside the option to hide the Dock icon and operate purely via keyboard shortcuts.

Tailored for Facebook, Instagram, and Google Workspace

Meta is explicitly targeting professionals who manage a business presence across its ecosystem. Users with professional Facebook or Instagram accounts can connect Meta AI to their ad campaigns, organic engagement analytics, and Google Workspace tools such as Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

This integration enables Meta AI to evaluate performance metrics, including reach, saves, and comments, to suggest content tweaks or draft automated weekly performance reports.

The assistant can also benchmark performance against industry competitors, review Meta Ads metrics to flag declining ad creative, and turn findings into multi-slide presentations, spreadsheets, or documents.

Pricing tier and privacy trade-offs

Meta AI remains free to download, though Meta has begun testing rate limits on compute-intensive tasks. Power users who exceed these limits will eventually have the option to purchase a Meta One subscription to increase their allowance.

Prospective users should remain mindful of data privacy before granting full access. According to Meta’s privacy terms, interactions with Meta AI features, including data imported through third-party integrations like Google Workspace and information visible during screen-sharing sessions, can be utilised to train Meta’s AI models.

While Meta states that private messages between personal contacts are excluded unless shared directly, business interactions and account data remain subject to model training.
