Imagine opening your banking app and discovering that you have over RM1 billion in your account.

That’s what an Aeon Bank customer in Malaysia claims to have experienced after an unusually large amount was credited to his account.

The incident was shared by Threads user @wmfwza on 14th October, after he saw a whopping RM1,000,315,879 transferred to his digital bank account.

From the looks of it, it looks like an error related to one of Aeon Bank’s Merdeka / Malaysia Day campaign.

Based on the shared screenshot, the transaction description stated “Cash Reward – Merdeka / Malaysia Day 2026 Campaign Cycle 6”, suggesting that the amount is linked to a promotional reward.

Two months ago, Aeon Bank kicked off a Merdeka campaign which offered customers a chance to win RM31 in cash rewards when they spend a minimum of RM15 using DuitNow QR.

A total of 69 winners were selected every week over a 6-week campaign from 17th August to 27th September 2026.

The RM1 billion transfer is surprisingly huge considering the campaign’s total cash reward allocation was only RM12,834 for a total of 414 winners.

The reference to “Cycle 6” also suggests that the transaction may have been associated with the final round of the promotion.

Transaction reversed, customer promised a reward from Aeon Bank

Instead of spending the money, the customer had contacted Aeon Bank to report the transaction and eventually the RM1 billion amount was reversed on the same day.

In a follow up post on threads, he said the bank had informed him that he would receive a reward as a gesture of appreciation for reporting the issue quickly.

We have also reached out to Aeon Bank for further clarification on the incident and what caused the technical glitch which could have been a very expensive mistake.

UPDATE: Aeon Bank has issued a statement acknowledging the issue on 14th October 2026. According to the digital bank, the incident is related to a recent promotion which has caused some account balances to be displayed incorrectly. It added that the matter was resolved promptly and no account or information were compromised.
