Smart has officially unveiled the Smart #2, the smallest member of its new-generation EV family, marking the return of the original Smart fortwo as a new fully electric city car.

Making its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show, the Smart #2 brings back the familiar ultra-compact two-seater design, complete with its signature proportions and rear-wheel-drive layout.

Measuring just 2,746mm long, the Smart #2 is built on an all-new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA) platform specifically developed for the urban two-seater.

The Smart #2 will initially be offered in Europe in four variants, with prices starting from EUR19,990 (about RM91,300).

Smart #2 specs and features

Unlike the Smart #1, Smart #3 and Smart #5, the Smart #2 goes back to the brand’s roots as an ultra-compact two-seater designed primarily for the city.

The standard Smart #2 measures 2,746mm long, 1,760mm wide with its mirrors folded and 1,555mm tall, with a wheelbase of 1,875mm. The limited Couture Edition is slightly longer at 2,764mm.

For some perspective, its turning circle is just 6.95 metres curb-to-curb.

Smart has also retained several familiar design elements from the original Smart fortwo, including the wheels-at-the-corners proportions, two-tone body and split tailgate.

Underneath, the Smart #2 uses Smart’s newly developed ECA platform together with its Tridion Cell Evo body structure.

Power comes from a rear-mounted electric motor producing 60kW (80hp) and 130Nm of torque. Drive is sent to the rear wheels through a single-speed transmission.

It does 0-100km/h in 11.6 seconds and has a top speed of 140km/h.

All variants use a 35.8kWh LFP battery. Smart currently quotes a preliminary WLTP combined range of up to 290km, with energy consumption rated at 13.6kWh per 100km.

The Smart #2 supports DC charging at up to 65kW, with a claimed 10-80% charging time of 20 minutes under optimal conditions.

For AC charging, the Pure gets a 7.4kW single-phase onboard charger, which takes about five hours to charge from 10% to 80%. Higher-spec versions support up to 11kW three-phase AC charging, which cuts charging time to about three hours.

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality is also available, although Smart says it requires a separately sold adapter.

The Smart #2 gets a five-link rear suspension, which Smart says is a first for its class. The rear tyres are also wider than those at the front.

Inside, there’s a 10.1-inch central touchscreen accompanied by an 8.8-inch driver display. Connectivity includes 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth, along with an eight-year Connectivity Package for supported connected vehicle services.

Smart also lists 305 litres of luggage capacity, expandable to a maximum of 527 litres with the front passenger seat folded and cargo filled to the roofline.

The entry-level Pure comes with features including 7 airbags, Smart Pilot Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Highway Assist, LED headlights and taillights, as well as V2L support.

The Pure+ adds 11kW AC charging and a heated driver’s seat, while the Premium gets a fixed glass roof, heated man-made leather seats and a seven-speaker Sennheiser sound system.

Meanwhile, the limited Couture Edition builds on the Premium specification with features including ambient lighting, a heated steering wheel, wireless charging, navigation, 16-inch Lyra wheels with gold detailing and a numbered interior badge.

Interestingly, Smart has also confirmed that a perkier Smart #2 Brabus variant is coming soon.

The company has opened registration of interest on its website, where customers can sign up to be contacted by a Smart partner once the Brabus version becomes available to order.

However, the Brabus specifications, performance figures and pricing have yet to be revealed.

Smart #2 pricing and availability

Smart #2 is available for orders across Europe from 13 October 2026.

In Germany, the Smart #2 is priced as follows:

  • Smart #2 Pure – EUR19,990 (about RM91,300)
  • Smart #2 Pure+ – EUR20,990 (about RM95,900)
  • Smart #2 Premium – EUR24,490 (about RM111,900)
  • Smart #2 Couture Edition – EUR25,690 (about RM117,400)

Smart says customers placing an early order can secure the Smart #2 ahead of its full market availability in 2027.

The Couture Edition is limited to 999 units for Europe and gets an Atelier White Matte exterior with a Platinum Gold roof and dedicated gold detailing.

For now, there’s no official word on whether the Smart #2 will be introduced in Malaysia. For our market, Smart’s current lineup includes the #1, #3 and #5.

Would you consider the Smart #2 if it is sold in Malaysia?
