Snapdragon 7s Gen 2: Qualcomm stealth launches new processor for midrange smartphones

Qualcomm has kept itself fairly busy in the past couple of months, as following the launch of the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 and their Snapdragon G lineup of processors, they’ve now followed it up with a new midrange mobile platform, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2.

Unlike the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2—which was more like a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 ‘lite’—the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 is a little more modest. Built on the 4nm process, it features an 8-core Kryo CPU housing four Cortex-A78 performance cores running at 2.4GHz alongside four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores at 1.95GHz. It curiously doesn’t use the newer Armv9 architecture seen on the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2, instead using a similar CPU layout to the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 instead, albeit clocked a fair bit higher.

Other features of note include an unspecified Adreno GPU that supports up to FHD+ resolutions running at up to a 144Hz refresh rate, a Hexagon NPU and a Snapdragon X62 5G Modem-RF system along with a FastConnect 6700 Mobile Connectivity system to handle wireless connectivity such as 5G, LTE, WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. The Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 will also support both LP-DDR5 memory running at up to 3200MHz as well as LP-DDR4X memory running at up to 2133MHz, with support for up to 12GB of memory density and UFS 4.0 storage.

The Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 also has slightly less capable camera support, with the Spectra image signal processor capable of up to a single 48MP shooter compared to the single 108MP camera that the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 can handle. It can also do 32MP+16MP dual cameras and a 16MP+16MP+16MP triple setup. There’s also support for Qualcomm Aqstic and Qualcomm aptX audio technology, as well as Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ fast charging.

At the moment, the upcoming Redmi Note 13 Pro is slated to be the first smartphone with the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 under the hood set for a launch in China later this month.
