As teased last month, Samsung Malaysia is looking for the best foldable app ideas to discover new possibilities for the foldable form factor. Samsung is now teaming up with Taylor’s University and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) for a Developer Day hackathon where students can pitch their creative ideas to enrich app UI/UX for the Galaxy Z Fold and the Galaxy Z Flip series, as well as mainstream foldable smartphones in Malaysia.

The Developer Day hackathon, happening on 14th to 15th June 2023 at RexKL, aims to enable students to leverage on Samsung and Android platform’s capabilities to flex their tech creativity as well as pitch their application in the real world and benefits to users. The hackathon is open to the public and it is one of many activities happening during Samsung’s Galaxy Space, which is a Gen-Z-inspired experiential event.

A total of 3 winning teams will be selected each day across the two-day event, bringing it to a total of 6 winning teams for the Developer Day event. Samsung Malaysia is giving away Samsung products worth up to RM39,188 each day, which include the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 and the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.

Commenting on the hackathon, Samsung Malaysia’s Vice President and Head of Mobile eXperience, KM Liew said, “At Samsung, we are passionate about bringing relevant mobile innovation to consumers, so it made sense for us to get Gen Z involved in creating new ideas and experiences for the Galaxy Z that are relatable to them. This is also in line with our ESG mission to empower young Malaysian talent to make waves in the tech space. We look forward to inspiring ideas with potential to bring them to market.”

Besides being the market leader for foldable hardware, Samsung is also putting more emphasis on the foldable user experience. Recently, they have demonstrated the possibility of the foldable UI/UX with optimised third-party apps from local partners such as AmBank, FamilyMart, Maxis, Pay4U and Zus Coffee. Samsung Malaysia is collaborating with more homegrown brands to create unique foldable experiences. Some of their upcoming partnerships include Gigi Coffee, Golden Screen Cinemas, TGV Cinemas and Zapp.
