Upcoming WhatsApp feature lets you send photos in HD quality or as smaller, lower res images

WhatsApp has been and still is one of the most widely used messaging apps this side of the world, which makes it all the stranger then that WhatsApp still doesn’t let you send images in its original high quality. This has led to users needing some workarounds, such as sending images as a document or simply using alternative methods such as sharing a cloud drive link or other platforms such as Discord.

That could finally be set to change though, as WABetaInfo reports a new feature currently in the midst of rolling out to the beta version of WhatsApp on Android (version 2.23.12.13) and on iOS (version 23.11.0.76). First spotted back in January when an option for it was seen but not yet integrated, the latest WhatsApp beta now has a toggle switch that lets users choose the quality of the image before they send it.

In a screenshot shared by WABetaInfo, you can see that as you’re sending your image, you now have an additional option on the top to choose the photo quality alongside current options to crop and edit your image. There, you can pick between the regular WhatsApp compressed quality, or to send it in ‘HD quality’ which presumably doesn’t compress the image.

WhatsApp does seem to warn you though that while HD photos are clearer, standard quality allows for less storage space used and is faster to send. Both the sender and the recipient will also see a ‘HD’ icon on the image in the chat to indicate that the image has been sent in HD quality. Unfortunately, there’s no word just yet on when WhatsApp plans to roll out this feature to the public release but it’s nice to see that the platform will finally allow users to send full sized images without needing to find workarounds anymore.
