Prime Video adds more local content for Malaysia, such as Imaginur and Abang Long Fadil 3

Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service has been in Malaysia for quite some time now—since late 2016 in fact—but has always lagged behind others such as Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar in Malaysia. Perhaps in a bid to expand towards local tastes then Prime Video has announced a new local content slate for Malaysian viewers as part of their commitment to invest in Malaysia and the wider Southeast Asia region.

As part of this local content expansion, you’ll find two new Amazon Originals such as That Cover Girl and Budak Flat which will be launching later this year. There’s also hit local box office titles from the last couple of years such as Abang Long Fadil 3 and Juang which will be available on Prime Video from today onwards, Coast Guard Malaysia: Ops Helang which will be available from 8 June onwards as well as Imaginur from 13 July onwards.

Other local content coming to Prime Video includes Stone Turtle (27 July), Kelab Rojak (today onwards) and Entitled (later this year), along with ever popular Malaysian favourites like KL Gangster, Leftenan Adnan, Munafik, the Upin & Ipin movies and the BoBoiBoy series. And of course you’ll also be able to access global titles such as The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Boys, The Wheel of Time, Citadel and Jinny’s Kitchen.

“We’re excited to bring more local content to entertain our customers in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia. With a slate of curated local content tailored for Malaysian viewers, we are committed to providing the best possible entertainment experience to local Prime Video customers.

We are delighted to bring Malaysian films and shows to not just audiences in Malaysia, but customers across the region and worldwide, and we’re always on the lookout to work with the best talent to create entertaining content that is relevant to our local audience’s diverse tastes,” – David Simonsen, Prime Video Southeast Asia director

As a quick recap, Prime Video is available for Malaysians with just one subscription plan available for RM25/month. This plan lets you watch content on Prime Video on up to three devices simultaneously at up to 4K Ultra HD resolution. New users can get a free trial of 7 days, though you will need to provide your payment information to them first. For a comparison, Netflix’s cheapest plan starts at RM17/month though that’s limited to streaming on mobile devices only at 480p, with Netflix Basic costing RM28/month if you want to have at least 720p resolution and and the ability to stream on your computer or TV too. Disney+ Hotstar meanwhile also only has one plan available which costs RM54.90 for three months.
