Garmin Vivomove Trend Malaysia: Stylish analogue watch with smart features priced at RM1,380

Aside from the impossibly expensive second-generation Marq series, Garmin has also launched the Vivomove Trend in Malaysia. This analogue-smartwatch hybrid sits at the other end of the spectrum, priced around the low-RM1,000 mark and coming with a smaller case than is typical for the brand, while still offering several must-have smartwatch features.

For the uninitiated, the Trend sits in the middle of the lifestyle-oriented Vivomove range, positioned slightly above the Vivomove Sport but below the Vivomove Style. This is reflected in the price, which is RM1,380 for the sole available variant. The watch is available in four colours—Black, White Cream (with a rose gold face), French Grey (with a gold face) and Mist Grey.

The Vivomove Trend is available to purchase now on the official Shopee and Lazada stores, local distributor AECO’s e-store, Garmin brand stores and authorised retailers.

As with other models in the Vivomove lineup, the Trend features an analogue watch face and hands, but it also hides an LCD display in the dial that lights up when you tap or swipe on the glass crystal. Compared to the bulky cases found on many Garmin models, it measures just 40mm across, though that’s still a little big for those with smaller wrists.

The Trend’s case is plastic, rather than aluminium on the Vivomove Style, and it loses out on that watch’s Gorilla Glass 3 crystal. On the flip side, it has a stainless steel case for a more upmarket feel than the Vivomove Sport. It also comes with a silicone strap, but with a lug width of 20mm, it can be swapped out for any conventional watch strap in that width.

Users interface with the Trend using only by touching the crystal; there are no physical buttons, nor a crown to manipulate items on the screen. The hour and minute hands more out of the way automatically when the display is being used.

Like any smartwatch worth their salt, the Trend supports push notifications for things like calls, messages and calendar reminders, although only Android users will be able to send quick replies to messages. It also tracks the usual health metrics, such as your heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, sleep stages, menstrual cycle, breathing and hydration. It will even show your stress levels and how much “body battery” (energy) you have left.

Added to that are lots of fitness tracking functions. The Trend will help you track your heart rate zones, calories burnt, steps taken and floors climbed, and it will also show you your VO₂ max and calculate your laps automatically when running.

The device also includes built-in exercise profiles for running, biking and swimming, as well as gym activity (strength/cardio/endurance training, yoga, pilates and so on). Speed and distance data is calculated by connecting to your phone’s GPS, and like many fitness trackers out there, the Trend is able to calculate your fitness age based on your weekly exercise, resting heart rate, body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage.

Safety features include the ability for Android users to send a message with your live location (again, using your phone’s GPS), which can be set to occur automatically when performing certain outdoor activities. All these functions can be activated using the Garmin Connect app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Garmin is claiming a battery life of around four days when using the Vivomove Trend in “smartwatch” mode; using it purely as a watch nets an additional hour. One unique thing about the new model is that it can be wirelessly charged using any Qi charger, although a proprietary wired charger is still included in the box. The watch is water resistant up to 50 metres.
