Launched in Kuala Lumpur back in 2019, Beam Mobility has now announced that its ubiquitous purple electric scooters are available in five more cities—Petaling Jaya, Ampang, Shah Alam, Kuantan and the island of Langkawi. This comes on the back of a relatively strong year for the personal mobility firm, which secured over 80,000 new signups in 2022, a 65% increase over 2021. The company said it now has well over 800,000 registered users.

Beam claimed its riders made over 1,000,000 trips last year and clocked over 2,000,000km, with 100,000 of those rides being first- and last-mile trips to and from an MRT, LRT or bus station. The company—which also offers its scooters in universities like Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Seri Iskandar in Perak and EduCity Iskandar in Johor—said it wants to expand its service to as many cities in Malaysia as possible, including in East Malaysia.

“Beam is currently working towards making its shared e-scooters available in all urban cities in Malaysia, regardless of whether they are in Peninsular or in Sabah and Sarawak.

“Traffic congestion and urban pollution are issues that many Malaysian citizens and authorities face today, and we believe that we have the solution towards solving these issues,” said Beam Mobility Malaysia General Manager Justin Tiew. He added that the company is working with relevant authorities such as the Ministry of Transport, Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) for its expansion.

To celebrate the milestone, the company is offering a weekly pass priced at RM9.99, although you’re limited to 15 minutes of riding a day. Compare that to the usual rate of 60 sen per minute, which would cost you RM9 just for one 15-minute ride—and you’d still have to pay a RM2.50 unlock fee that’s waived with the weekly pass. Also available is a RM10 monthly pass, available until February 28, that will eliminate unlock fees for all your rides that month.
