As rumoured earlier, the iPad Pro 2022 is now official and it will be coming soon to Malaysia. As expected, this is a minor hardware refresh from last year’s Apple M1 to a newer Apple M2 chip. The new flagship tablet also introduces new Apple Pencil features as well as wireless enhancements

M2 chip offers 15% faster CPU, 35% faster GPU and 40% faster Neural Engine

Being a minor refresh, most of the hardware remains unchanged from last year’s iPad Pro. The 2022 iPad Pro is offered with either an 11″ Liquid Retina Display or a larger 12.9″ Liquid Retina XDR display which uses a mini-LED backlit panel. The iPad Pro still offers the most extensive storage options ranging from 128GB to 2TB. The lower three storage models get 8GB of RAM while the 1TB and 2TB options come with 16GB of RAM.

Powering the 2022 iPad Pro is Apple’s M2 chip which boasts an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. It also offers 100GB/s memory bandwidth which is 50% more than the M1 version. According to Apple, the new iPad Pro offers up to 15% faster CPU performance, up to 35% faster graphics and up to 40% more Neural Engine processing power than the M1.

The Cupertino company added that the power of the M2 extends to the new media engine and image signal processor which allows users to capture ProRes video from the onboard cameras, and transcode ProRes footage up to 3x faster.

New Apple Pencil Hover features

The new iPad Pro still supports the 2nd gen Apple Pencil but Apple has added a new hover feature that’s powered by the new iPadOS 16. With the new hardware and software enhancements, the Apple Pencil can be detected up to 12mm above the display’s surface which provides users with a preview before the tip makes contact. This sounds quite similar to Samsung’s S Pen hover feature.

Some of the new hover features include automatic expansion of a text field when you try to scribe text or providing a quick preview of the mark before you sketch or illustrate.

Faster WiFi 6E with up to 2.4Gbps downloads

The previous iPad Pro already supports 5G but now they have improved the wireless performance with WiFi 6E. According to Apple, this will offer double the WiFi performance with speeds of up to 2.4Gbps, provided you are connected to a WiFi 6E router with an ultra-high-speed connection.

iPad Pro 2022 priced from RM3,899 in Malaysia

The pricing of the new iPad Pro 2022 in Malaysia has gone up significantly compared to last year’s M1-powered model. If we were to compare the launch prices, there’s an increase of between RM400 to RM1,250.
