Apple TV 4K 2022 Malaysia: A15 Bionic chip, HDR10+, USB-C remote and RM150 price cut

Alongside the new iPad and iPad Pro, Apple also revealed a new Apple TV 4K, which offers more performance and a smattering of new features. The device has long looked like a solution to a problem nobody asked for—especially here in Malaysia—and while this latest version probably won’t sway you, the new bits are still nice to have if you’re looking for the ultimate Apple TV+ experience.

Apple TV 4K 2022 Malaysia price and availability

The Apple TV 4K redesign coincides with a useful RM150 price cut. This is despite storage being bumped up across the lineup, with pricing as follows:

  • Apple TV 4K with 64GB storage – RM699
  • Apple TV 4K with Ethernet + 128GB storage – RM799

As you can see, Apple has dropped the Ethernet port from the base model, which not only provides a wired Internet connection but also support for Thread mesh networking for smart home devices. Availability for the Malaysian market has yet to be announced; those in the 30 first-wave markets such as the US can order theirs today, with the device shipping on November 4.

Apple TV 4K 2022 specs and features

The biggest change is undoubtedly the processor, which has been bumped up from an A12 Bionic to an A15 Bionic—the same chip found in the iPhone 13 and 14. Cupertino is claiming the same vague performance improvements: 50% for CPU and 30% for GPU, said to enable a faster and more responsive UI and smoother gameplay.

With the new chip comes support for HDR10+, on top of the usual Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos capabilities. Another improvement is visual—the A15 Bionic uses 30% less power and eliminates the need for an internal fan, resulting in a more compact design. The top of the box now only has the Apple logo, without the “tv” attached.

Elsewhere, the aluminium remote looks practically identical to last year’s model but now charges using a USB-C port, continuing Apple’s mandated move away from its proprietary Lightning standard. Pressing the side button brings up the improved Siri as part of tvOS 16, featuring a more compact card interface and the ability to recognise different users. If you’re using AirPods, you can also bring up the assistant by saying “Hey Siri”. Unfortunately, Siri on the Apple TV 4K is still inexplicably unavailable in Malaysia.
