Touch ‘n Go RFID fuelling at 200 Shell stations by end-year, now available at 88 stations nationwide

After a pilot testing period of more than a year, Shell Malaysia and Touch ‘n Go have officially launched their RFID fuelling service, now available at 88 stations nationwide. As previously reported, you can simply pay for your fuel using your car’s TNG RFID tag, without having to use your smartphone or credit card.

This latest expansion of the RFID network follows the addition of 30 stations in Klang Valley in May; there were only five stations when the pilot trial kicked off in July 2021. The new stations expand the network into Ipoh, Taiping, Penang and Gurun to the north, as well as Temerloh and Kuantan to the east. The plan is to outfit RFID readers at 200 stations by the end of the year, increasing that number to 50% of all Shell outlet within the next three years. How to activate RFID Fuelling on TNG eWallet?

In order to use the RFID fuelling feature, you’ll need to enable it in your TNG eWallet app by tapping on the ‘More’ icon on the home page, then the ‘Shell’ icon under Transportation. There, you can tap on ‘Activate Fuelling’ to bring you to a menu where you can set the preset cash amount; any unused amount will be returned to your eWallet immediately. You can also input your BonusLink card number to earn points.

How to use RFID Fuelling at Shell?

Filling up using RFID for payments is as simple as parking up at a supported bay; a display mounted either on the ceiling or near the pump will let you know if you can proceed. Once a green pump sign is shown, you have 80 seconds to lift the nozzle and fill your car up, after which the pump will be disabled and the preset amount will be returned to your eWallet.

Of course, you will need a working TNG RFID tag for this, and because there’s a camera to read your car’s registration number, your number plate will also need to be legible with no missing letters or numbers. Otherwise, the transaction will be declined. Unlike Petronas’ Setel, you don’t need your smartphone to pay for fuel, so anyone who uses your car will be able to pump petrol or diesel using your eWallet.

For now, the RFID function will be available at two bays at each station, although Shell Malaysia’s general manager for mobility Seow Lee Ming told the media at a press conference that the company will equip more bays if the demand increases.

“Over the last year, we have received positive response from over 10,000 pilot users, and we have been working closely with Touch ‘n Go to continuously optimise the technology to ensure a truly hassle-free payment experience,” Lee Ming said in a statement. “We are confident that this collaboration with Touch ‘n Go will further enhance our customer experience at Shell.”

When asked how Touch ‘n Go has responded to some of the shortcomings of the RFID fuelling system, CEO Effendy Shahul Hamid told us the company optimised the positioning of the overhead tag readers and improved the underlying software during the pilot programme. This is said to have improved the detection of the RFID tags and streamlined the refuelling process.

To get users on board, Shell and Touch ‘n Go are offering a RM10 cashback to the first 25,000 customers using the RFID fuelling feature. You’ll need to be a first-time user and pump a minimum of RM50 on your first RFID transaction to be eligible for the rebate.
