At its Unpacked event tonight, Samsung revealed its Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 foldables and Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro wearables. Those are the highlights, but it’s capping off its presentation with its latest flagship wireless earbuds – the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro.

A year and a bit on from the release of the Buds Pro, the second-generation model retains the in-ear design, but the buds are 15% smaller and have been reshaped for a more secure fit; Samsung says this prevents them from rotating while being worn. They also ditch the chrome outer skin for a matte finish, while the weight has gone down from 6.3g to 5.5g. The case, on the other hand, is slightly heavier at 43.4g.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg – you also get new coaxial two-way speakers (still from AKG) claimed to offer richer sound. The drivers are also capable of delivering spacial audio (officially called 3D Audio). To take advantage of this, the Buds 2 Pro support 24-bit audio via Samsung’s proprietary seamless codec (SSC HiFi).

Elsewhere, active noise cancellation (ANC) performance is said to have improved by 40% compared to the Buds Pro. Additionally, the Buds 2 Pro’s Auto Switch feature now allows audio to be rerouted from a Samsung TV to your Galaxy phone when taking calls, while locating the buds is now possible via the SmartThings Find app. Water resistance of the buds is rated at IPX7, as before.

Despite the smaller size, battery capacity remains the same at 61 mAh, giving you five hours of playtime (eight hours with ANC off). The case’s battery is also larger at 515 mAh, contributing to a total playtime of 18 hours (29 hours with ANC off). Samsung says you can get one hour of playtime with five minutes of charging the buds. You can charge the case itself using either the USB-C port or Qi wireless charging.

In Malaysia, the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are priced at RM899 (RM100 more than the Buds Pro) and will ship on the same September 2 date as the other devices launched tonight. The buds are available in Graphite and White, as well as the Bora Purple that made its debut on the Z Flip 4. If you pre-order now, you’ll also get a free Z Flip 3 cover worth RM99, oddly making the whole thing look like Samsung’s previous-gen foldable.
