Nintendo denies Switch Pro is in development, despite developers making 4K games

I was so sure that Nintendo was going to come out with the Switch Pro back in June. But in true Nintendo fashion, they decided to defy the odds and introduce the 7-inch OLED screen model instead. But did a plan for the Switch Pro exist, or is it secretly in development?

Bloomberg reported that employees at 11 game companies said their teams were in possession of Nintendo’s 4K development kit for the Switch. The companies ranged from large publishers to small studios—including one that has never made a console game before, Zynga Inc. The company has previously made games like the Farmville franchise and Words With Friends for mobile.

Currently, the Nintendo Switch is at a technical disadvantage if you compare it to other major consoles in the market. Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation have offered 4K-capable consoles for years and even released more powerful hardware in 2020. Rumours of a 4K-ready Switch Pro would have been a major improvement, as the OLED Switch can only push a maximum of 1080p.

Insiders also report that a system capable of handling 4K games for Nintendo might be released last next year at the earliest. However, Nintendo claimed that Bloomberg’s reporting is “false”, and that they have no plans for any new model other than OLED model.

A Zynga spokesperson has also said that the company “does not have a 4K developer kit from Nintendo” after Bloomberg’s publication. Developers have declined to speculate on Nintendo’s plans for another console, however they said they expect to release their 4K Switch games “during or after the second half of next year”.

Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) will be available on 8 October 2021 for USD 349.99 (RM1,455.26). It has a bigger 7-inch screen on handheld mode, and its OLED screen has more control on a per pixel basis and have have better contrast, brightness, and viewing angles. Additionally, the OLED Switch will also have 64GB of internal storage and “enhanced audio” from the system’s onboard speakers.
