Samsung has recently introduced its latest foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3. As part of its sustainability efforts, both flagship phones will not come with a charger in the box. You don’t even get a pair of headphones, which is similar to the Galaxy S21 series.

As confirmed by the pre-order pages in the US and official unboxing videos, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and the Flip 3 will come bundled with just two items. The box will include the phone, a USB-C to USB-C cable, and a SIM ejector tool. That means if you need to charge your devices, you could either reuse your previous USB-C charger or purchase a brand new power adapter from Samsung or third-party brands.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 supports 25W USB-C fast-charging which is the same as the previous Galaxy Z Fold 2. In terms of battery, the new model has a slightly lower capacity of 4,400mAh, which is 100mAh less than the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 still charges at a rather slow 15W via USB-C. Despite the new upgrades with a larger 1.9″ cover display and a more powerful Snapdragon 888 processor, it still retains a rather small 3,300mAh battery. For those who don’t want to fiddle around with cables, both Z devices support wireless charging up to 10W.

With fewer items included, the box for the new devices is much more compact and it’s significantly thinner than before. This makes shipping more efficient as they can load up more devices with the same footprint. The move to ditch the charger was started by Apple with the iPhone 12. After mocking Apple, Samsung eventually followed the same approach to address sustainable consumption issues.

However, this sustainable initiative isn’t adopted fully throughout Samsung Mobile. Its more affordable Galaxy A lineup is still shipped with a charger and Samsung even includes a 25W USB-C adapter in the box for the Galaxy A72.

If you want to buy the original charger, the 25W PD Adapter costs RM79 standalone or RM129 which comes with an extra USB-C to USB-C cable. Alternatively, you can find other chargers that support USB-PD 3.0 PPS standards from reputable brands. Some even offer multi-port options which enable you to charge several devices from a single brick.

At the moment, Samsung Malaysia has yet to reveal the local pricing and pre-order details for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Z Flip 3. Based on previous flagship launches, it is likely that Samsung will bundle additional freebies to make up for the lack of a charger in the box.

When the Galaxy S21 series was introduced early this year, many were unhappy that a premium device didn’t come with a charger or headphones included. However, during the pre-order period, Samsung Malaysia had thrown in a free Wireless Charging Trio pad along with a Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag and a pair of Galaxy Buds Live or Galaxy Buds Pro. In total, that’s over RM1,000 worth of freebies for early bird pre-order customers.
