Xiaomi will be launching the Mi Mix 4 on Aug 10, features under-display camera

August is looking set to be a pretty big month in the smartphone world, as Xiaomi has pretty much confirmed that it will be launching the Mi Mix 4 on the 10th of August—one day before Samsung’s own Galaxy Unpacked event.

According to Xiaomi’s own Weibo page, the Chinese company will be having an event on August 10 at 7.30pm, with a teaser pic with the name ‘MIX 4’ so you can be sure what the headlining product will be. And judging from later teasers with a clear pane of glass, the Mi Mix 4 will likely feature a full screen display without a notch or punch-hole, instead using an under-display camera for the front camera.

This was followed up with a few more teaser pics, and even a video highlighting the Mi Mix lineup’s past, though you’ll have to know Chinese to understand it. Xiaomi then teased ultra wideband (UWB) support in the Mi Mix 4. UWB helps complement Bluetooth and would allow for smart devices to locate themselves more precisely.

We had already seen a leak of an alleged Mi Mix 4 display just before their Weibo announcement, showing the notchless, punch-hole free display panel of the upcoming device. As you can see, you can’t see exactly tell where the spot for the selfie camera would be until the display is turned off. And while the leak shows the display panel being bent around, it is supposedly ‘unpackaged’ meaning the final device is likely not a foldable.

Further leaks, this time by known leaker Ice Universe, showed off super close up images of what is believed to be the Mi Mix 4’s display. It shows the pixel arrangement of the area over the under-display camera and the rest of the screen in the Mi Mix 4 and compares it to similar solutions by Oppo and ZTE. It’s pretty clear from the images that Xiaomi’s under-display camera and screen solution is currently the better of the three.

Personally, it feels like a long time coming for Xiaomi’s Mi Mix lineup to return to form. It’s always been known for its innovative designs, such as the original Mi Mix from 2016 that had a bezelless design before Apple made it cool. Then there was the Mi Mix 3 with it’s sliding mechanism as a means to get a full screen display without a notch or cut out hole. And who can forget when they stunned everyone with the Mi Mix Alpha that was screen on the front, sides and back too.

It’ll be interesting to see what tricks Xiaomi can pull off this time with the Mi Mix 4. You can check out more about Xiaomi’s upcoming event here.
