Super Mario 64 copy sells for more than RM6.5 million at auction

On 11 June 2021, a sealed copy of Super Mario 64 was sold for USD 1,560,000 (RM6,537,180) at Heritage Auctions, setting a new record for the most expensive video game ever sold. It beat a previous record set just two days before, when a copy of The Legend of Zelda sold for USD 870,000 (RM3.6 million).

Heritage Auctions is known for being an auction site for sought after collectible items, including a bunch of recent Nintendo game copies. Unlike if an item is sold on eBay, the winning bidder at Heritage Auctions must pay the auctioned amount, or else “bear interest at the highest rate permitted by law from the date of invoice until paid”.

Over the past 12 months, the record for the most expensive video game ever has risen dramatically. Besides the Super Mario 64 copy and The Legend of Zelda copy sold this month, copies of Super Mario Bros. were sold for up to USD 660,000 (RM2.7 million).

“Well—we’re a bit speechless on this one. What can we even say that would do this copy the justice it deserves? The cultural significance of this title and its importance to the history of video games is paramount, and the condition of this copy is just so breathtaking that we’re really at a loss here,” wrote the seller in the description box.

Old-school Nintendo items seemed to be on demand lately. Prices of Pokemon cards have skyrocketed, and eBay also announced that people will soon be able to scan Pokémon cards with their app to sell them.
