Apple released an important security update for older iPhones that don’t support iOS 13 or later

If you’re currently using an older Apple gadget running on iOS 12, the company has released an important security update—and you should be downloading it right now. The security update patches three vulnerabilities, including some that may have been exploited in the wild.

iOS 12.5.4 is available for iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and iPod touch (6th generation). To get the update, you can go to Settings, General, and then select Software Update.

The support page for iOS 12.5.4 mentions that the patch targets two WebKit vulnerabilities and one “maliciously crafted certificate”. Apple also says that the two WebKit vulnerabilities may have “actively exploited”.

The same vulnerability was also patched in iOS 14.6 for newer devices. We usually don’t hear of companies like Apple thinking about users with older phones. So, it’s a nice surprise that something as important as a security update is being made available for them.

Based on some worldwide data, nearly 8.3% of all iPhone users in 2020 still use a 6 Plus and below. 5.3% of iPhone users had an iPhone 6, 1.55% had an iPhone 5S, and 1.42% had an iPhone 6 Plus.

Apple’s iOS 14.6 update for the newer devices, however, has had a few problems as reported by netizens. Mostly, there are reports of excessive battery drainage and overheating.
