MCO: Lockdown extended by two weeks until 28 June

Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has announced a two-week extension for the ongoing “total lockdown” under movement control order 3.0. The current Phase 1 total lockdown was supposed to run for two weeks until 14th June 2021 and it is now extended until 28th June 2021.

The decision was made during a National Security Council special meeting that’s chaired by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin with suggestions from the Ministry of Health. The extension was announced taking into account that the number of new COVID-19 cases still remain high with over 5,000 cases reported daily since 19th May 2021.

During this period, the ongoing SOPs remain unchanged. All forms of social activities are not allowed and only essential economic sectors are allowed to operate. Interstate and interdistrict travel are still strictly prohibited and a maximum of two per household are permitted to leave home to shop for necessities within a 10km radius. Children aged 12 years and below are also not permitted to go out unless it is for an emergency, medical treatment, education, and exercise.

During the initial total lockdown announcement, it was mentioned that if Phase 1 is successful in lowering the number of new cases, the country will enter Phase 2 of total lockdown for a period of four weeks. Under this phase, selected business sectors that do not involve large gatherings will be allowed to reopen. If the COVID-19 situation continues to improve, Malaysia will enter Phase 3 where almost all economic sectors are allowed to open which is similar to the MCO situation before June 2021.

This story is developing.
