The Zenfone 8 series will launch soon, with Asus confirming a global launch on the 12th of May 2021. Within the launch invitation, Asus hinted at a compact flagship device that will be “big on performance”, while staying “compact in size”. However, some new information has surfaced courtesy of 91mobiles that indicates that we’ll be seeing more than one model in the series—including one using a flipping camera mechanism.
Just like the ZenFone 7 series, the ZenFone 8 Flip will purportedly come with a flip-up camera mechanism. There are two main benefits to this choice: better quality selfies/vlogs, and an unencumbered display free from notches and hole-punch cutouts. For now, there hasn’t been any information on a possible ZenFone 8 Pro, so perhaps Asus is planning a later launch for that top-end model.
In any case, feast your eyes on the leaked images:
A couple of specs have been leaked, too. These include a 6.67″ AMOLED display pushing a FHD+ resolution with a 90Hz refresh rate on the ZenFone 8 Flip, along with a Snapdragon 888 under the hood mated to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. You could also be getting a large 5,000mAh battery, with 30W fast-charging supported. Within that moving camera module sits a 64MP main shooter, an 8MP telephoto camera, and a 12MP macro lens; the phone also might support 8K video recording.
As for the ZenFone 8, it’s a smaller 5.92″ AMOLED display with a FHD+ resolution (refresh rate not mentioned). It retains the Snapdragon 888 under the hood, and you get 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. It’ll also supposedly support 8K video recording, while you get a 64MP primary sensor and a 12MP macro camera.
Probably due to its compact size (148×68.5x9mm), it’s also a smaller 4,000mAh battery to sustain the device, although you’ll still be getting 30W fast-charging. Oh, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, too. As mentioned above, there hasn’t been any word on a Pro model, but if the leaked information in this article is true, it seems likely that Asus will launch a top-end model to complement the compact and wacky (Flip) models in the series.
So, what do you think? Personally, I’ve been waiting for a compact competitor to the iPhone 12 Mini (which I’m using as a daily driver right now) from the Android world—besides the Sony Xperia 5 III. And, in a world of increasingly, depressingly generic smartphones, it’ll be cool to see two unique devices being launched soon.
