COVID-19: 39 new cases today in Malaysia, 73.85% of cases have recovered

Malaysia has recorded four straight days of less than 60 new COVID-19 daily cases. As reported during today’s update, there are 39 new cases which brings the total number of cases to 6,467. There are no deaths reported today and the current death toll remains at 107.

There are 74 new recoveries which brings the total number of patients recovered to 4,776. At the moment, 73.85% of cases have recovered in Malaysia while the mortality rate is currently 1.65%.

According to the ministry, 1,584 patients are still receiving treatment. 19 are in ICU while 8 are requiring respiratory support. After experiencing triple-digit figures during the weekend, Malaysia has been recording double-digit daily figures during the conditional movement control period, with the number of recoveries exceeding the number of new cases.

Out of the 39 new cases reported today, one is an imported case and 8 cases are from EMCO areas.

Cluster identified at a shopping centre in Cheras

The ministry has also identified a cluster which involves a security guard that’s based at an unnamed shopping centre in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. As of 12pm, 7th of May, there are 10 positive cases reported from this cluster which consists of 9 Nepalese citizens and 1 Malaysian. The source of infection is still under investigation.

Additional measures to contain and to prevent the spread of the disease were taken which includes COVID-19 screening on all workers and close contacts of those affected. The affected Nepalese workers were staying in the same accommodation in Cheras. According to the Ministry of Health, COVID-19 screening has been conducted on all housemates as well as security personnel and staff at the shopping mall.

At the moment, a total of 436 individuals were screened and 10 are found to be positive. Meanwhile, 347 returned negative and 79 are still waiting for their results. The Cheras and Titiwangsa health district offices will continue to monitor the situation of this cluster. All close contacts for each case have been summoned for further screening.

10 red zones remain

According to the latest update which is correct as of 12pm 6th May, there are still 10 red zones in the country. There are 4 red zones in Kuala Lumpur, 3 red zones in Selangor, 2 red zones in Sarawak and 1 red zone in Johor. Meanwhile, Perak, Perlis, Penang, Kedah and Kelantan are fully green statewide.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has added that the Ministry of Health has also screened emergency surgery and semi-emergency cases at government hospitals. Out of the 7,255 tests conducted, only 5 positive cases were found which is less than 0.1%.
