AirAsia removes processing fee for flights to, from and within Malaysia starting 1st Oct 2019

Following an earlier announcement made by its Group CEO, Tony Fernandes, AirAsia has announced that processing fee for Malaysia for bookings made from 1st October 2019 will be removed to keep air travel affordable.

The removal of the processing fee is only applicable for bookings made for flights to and from Malaysia. For other countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines, the processing fee will be removed by 31st December 2019.

AirAsia explained that the processing fee is used for ongoing administrative, maintenance and development costs of AirAsia’s online systems to ensure a secure and safe booking environment. The low-cost airline says they will fully absorb this cost moving forward.

According to AirAsia Group President (Airlines), Bo Lingam, “AirAsia is synonymous with affordable air travel, and we hope that by doing this, we will stay true to our promise – now everyone can fly. We feel this is especially relevant now with higher passenger service charges (PSC) at klia2. We want to cut travel costs so our guests don’t suffer, and we believe every little helps.”

He also said “With Visit Malaysia 2020 coming up next year, we hope this will also encourage more people to travel to and within Malaysia. We want to make that an incredible success.”

At the time of writing, the processing fee is still charged for bookings made for flights departing on 1st October. Depending on the destination, the processing fee can go as high as RM24 per pax for a return trip from Kuala Lumpur to Haneda, Tokyo. For a group of four passengers, that’s a total of RM96 in processing fees for a return trip. If you want to pay without any additional fees, AirAsia encourages its customers to use their BigPay prepaid Mastercard.

Editor’s note: Title has been updated to reflect domestic flights are also included in the processing fee renewal.
