Last month, the Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Gobind Singh, had urged TM to submit a proposal to tackle the Streamyx issue. Today, the broadband provider has revealed its plan to provide better internet experience for existing Streamyx and Unifi customers that will begin starting today.
To address the challenges of their existing copper network, TM will embark on a new network rollout exercise that will utilise several technologies such as fibre, wireless and GigaWire. According to TM, customers will be migrated by phases starting today until 2021. The provider targets 70% of these customers will enjoy Unifi services by the end of 2020.
The plan was revealed to the Ministry as well as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission during the Kembara Digital Malaysia event in Ipoh, Perak. To implement this massive network exercise, TM intends to seek support from the Malaysian government by utilising existing funding to deliver better broadband experiences for both rural and sub-urban areas in line with the National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP).
In the meantime, customers that are outside the Unifi coverage areas can enjoy cheaper Streamyx subscription. TM has announced a new entry-level Streamyx plan that offers 8Mbps from as low as RM69/month for existing customers.
According to TM, they have already upgraded 973,000 Unifi customers with up to 10X faster speeds in April 2019. However, there are remaining 934,000 Streamyx and Unifi customers that have yet to be upgraded. TM has also shared that 266,000 Streamyx customers in Unifi areas have already switched to faster fibre broadband and 226,000 Streamyx customers in non-Unifi areas have received their 2X speed upgrade.
