Xiaomi’s Mi Band 2 is all grown up now

The wait is over, boys and girls. Xiaomi has finally unveiled the successor to their popular fitness tracker, the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 and it’s a doozy.

Xiaomi’s brand new Mi Band 2 is quite a significant upgrade to the old Mi Band or Mi Band Pulse as it comes with an OLED display and a capacitive button.

This means that the new Mi Band 2 will be able to act as a proper watch as well as a fitness tracker. Other features include a step counter, heart rate ADI accelerometer and an optical heart rate sensor. Its pedometer algorithm has also been upgraded so you get more accurate step counting. It will also track and monitor your sleep patterns via the phone app, being able to distinguish between heavy and light sleep patterns.

Now, with the OLED display, you can view all that information and more right on the Mi Band itself, without needing to whip out your smartphone and check the app. The Mi Band 2 will also let you switch between screens by tapping on the capacitive button or tilting your wrist.

The device also sports a brand new hypoallergenic silicone band and is IP67 water resistant. This new strap is designed to keep your Mi Band 2 locked securely in place so that it doesn’t accidentally fly out when you’re playing sports again. What’s more, the fitness tracker has a battery life that can last up to 20 days on a single charge of its 70 mAh battery.

Xiaomi has also included sedentary alerts which you can customise to nudge you with a little vibrating action to remind you to get up and move. The Mi Band 2 will also measure your running pace, monitor your heartbeat and displays it on its little OLED screen during a run/jog.

The Mi Band 2 also has a feature to help you unlock your smartphone in an instant. Each Mi Band has a unique ID that your smartphone can detect and unlock when it’s nearby, but is only available on devices running Android 5.0 and above with Bluetooth 4.0.

Xiaomi’s Mi Band 2 will be priced at CNY149 (around RM94), which is pricier than the original Mi Band and Mi Band Pulse. But then again, you’re getting a lot more tech too. For more information you can check out this post on the MIUI forums or their official website.
