The latest smartphone with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 to arrive in Malaysia comes from RedMagic. The RedMagic 8 Pro is the gaming brand’s flagship model, superseding the 7S Pro, and it’s claimed to offer a big boost in performance, cooling and battery life—three things that are most important to gamers.
RedMagic 8 Pro Malaysia pricing and availability
The RedMagic 8 Pro is available in two different configurations, with either 12 or 16GB of RAM, 256 or 512GB of RAM and a matte black or a transparent “Void” finish. Pricing is as follows:
- Matte, 12GB RAM + 256GB storage – RM3,699
- Void, 16GB RAM + 512GB storage – RM4,299
Sales kick off on February 25, and early-bird customers will be able to purchase the RedMagic 8 Pro with a sizeable RM800 discount. This bring prices down to:
- Matte, 12GB RAM + 256GB storage – RM2,899
- Void, 16GB RAM + 512GB storage – RM3,499
As such, the RedMagic 8 Pro is by far and away the cheapest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 phone, undercutting the iQoo 11 by a handy RM400—although the latter gets 16GB of RAM. Even the most expensive Void variant is RM100 less expensive than the range-topping OnePlus 11, and you get double the storage. This promo is only available on the brand’s Lazada store.
RedMagic 8 Pro specs and features
Headlining the specs of the RedMagic 8 Pro is of course the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, mated to either 12 or 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB or 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage. Also fitted is a dedicated Red Core 2 gaming chip that can adjust the shoulder triggers (yes, the 8 Pro has those), vibrations, touch and sound effects on the fly.
A gaming phone needs some serious cooling, so the 8 Pro features a new liquid-cooled 3D Icing Vapor Chamber, sitting under the screen and using different three dimensional shapes and sizes to hit a volume of 2,068 mm³ while maximising space efficiency. This improves heat conduction by 600% compared to previous models.
As was the case with the 7S Pro, the 8 Pro is cooled by a tiny internal fan that spins up to 20,000rpm, which on the Void model is lit up with RGB lights (of course). The ultra-thin blades, measuring just 0.1mm thick, are claimed to reduce the temperature by 2.7°C and noise by 4dB, all while increasing airflow volume by 35%. The VC and fan form part of a ten-layer heat dissipation structure that also includes air ducts, an aluminium mid frame and graphene and copper foils.
Juicing all these components is a significantly larger 6,000mAh battery which, when combined with the more efficient chip, results in a battery life claimed to be more than 20% longer. The 8 Pro also supports up to 65W fast charging, fully charging the phone in under 43 minutes.
Up front, the 8 Pro features a 6.8-inch AMOLED display with a Full HD+ (2,480×1,116 pixels) resolution, a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, a 960Hz touch sampling rate and a peak brightness of 1,300 nits. One notable feature is the inclusion of an under-display 16MP selfie camera, just like the 7S Pro, albeit with several improvements—which include bumping the resolution in this area to the same 400ppi as the rest of the display—to better conceal it.
There’s also a 50MP main camera with a 1/1.57-inch Samsung GN5 sensor, but the rest of the cameras are nothing to write home about—an 8MP ultra-wide and a 2MP macro shooter. The 8 Pro joins the OnePlus 11 in supporting WiFi 7, joining a suite of the latest connectivity features that include 5G and Bluetooth 5.3.
You’ll also find an under-display fingerprint sensor with heart rate detection, a 3.5mm headphone jack, stereo speakers and DTS:X Ultra support. And of course, no gaming phone will be complete without customisable RGB lighting at the back. The RedMagic 8 Pro runs on Android 13 skinned with RedMagic OS 6.0, which among other things includes the RedMagic Studio that lets you stream your games to a PC or TV.
