Earlier this month, YTL Communications had commenced its free public WiFi service in Penang that’s powered by Terragraph. The technology promises to offer fibre broadband-like speeds through wireless and it’s faster to deploy using existing street furniture such as lamp posts.
The Terragraph trial will be running for a period of 6 months beginning 1st March 2019. If you want to try it out, YTL is offering free WiFi around George Town’s heritage area. There are a total of 60 nodes and the network currently covers the following locations:
Although Terragraph operates on the higher 60GHz band, each node has a WiFi router which allows anyone with a WiFi enabled device to enjoy the free access. According to their FAQ, you’ll need to sign in with either your Facebook account or Google ID.
Apart from providing free public WiFi, YTL is also offering Fixed Wireless Access to residents, businesses and government departments located in coverage areas during the trial period. The FAQ states that those who are interested can register their interest on the website but at the moment, there’s no form available on the Terragraph page.
