Apple Watch Ultra 4: What’s new?

At the centre of the hardware upgrades is the new S11 silicon, which drives Apple’s overhauled Health Sensing System. Equipped with larger green LEDs on the optical sensor, the watch continuously monitors heart rate every five seconds.
Heart Rate Variability (HRV) sampling frequency has also been increased up to 24 times, split into Recovery HRV for short-term stress monitoring and Overall HRV for broader cardiovascular health trends. These health metrics power a new native Readiness feature.
Just like recovery metrics on many sports watches out there, Readiness analyses training load, sleep scores, and daily vitals to generate a daily score from 0 to 10, accompanied by actionable recommendations on whether users should push their workouts or focus on recovery.

Battery endurance sees a notable increase across all operating modes. For standard daily usage, the Apple Watch Ultra 4 now delivers up to 50 hours of battery life, which stretches up to 84 hours when Low Power Mode is activated. For outdoor endurance tracking, the Extended Workout mode tracks full GPS and heart rate data for up to 25 hours.
Meanwhile, the Max Extended Workout mode extends continuous outdoor tracking up to 45 hours while maintaining 1-second GPS recording intervals. Fast charging has also been improved, supplying up to 18 hours of usage from a 15-minute charge.
The pedometer system on the S11 chip features redesigned machine learning algorithms for improved distance and step precision, accompanied by an official Steps complication for watch faces.

For accessibility, the S11 chip uses Apple’s Secure Exclave hardware to handle on-device Sound Recognition, allowing the watch to alert deaf or hard-of-hearing users to sounds like doorbells, sirens, or alarms without transmitting audio off-device. On-wrist Shazam music recognition has also been built directly into the Smart Stack interface.
Shipping with watchOS 27, the Ultra 4 gains single-handed tap gestures to select Smart Stack widgets using a pinch gesture, dynamic app grid layouts, and support for perimenopause and menopause tracking within Cycle Tracking. Existing supported Apple Watch Ultra models can update to watchOS 27 starting Monday, 14 September.
