Xiaomi EVs coming to Malaysia? Latest hiring move hints yes

Xiaomi EVs might be on their way to Malaysia. In what appears to be the first major sign of Xiaomi Auto’s intention for Malaysia, the company has put up a recruitment notice on LinkedIn’s Jobs section for a Government Relations Manager of Automotive in Malaysia.

First reported by BitAuto Malaysia, it appears that the recruitment notice was published on the platform around two days ago. The successful candidate will become the main bridge between Xiaomi Auto and the Malaysian government, taking on key responsibilities such as:

  • Liaising with key government agencies such as the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii), Road Transport Department (JPJ), and Royal Malaysian Customs.
  • Facilitating, managing, and keeping track of regulatory approvals, compliance issues, tax incentives, import duty exemptions, and government incentive programs.
  • Providing insights to the internal team regarding importation (CBU) and local assembly (CKD) operations, including their political implications.

Even though Xiaomi has been in Malaysia for over a decade and has established itself as one of the most well-known names in the smart devices segment, the company is still relatively new to the automotive world. After all, its first car, the Xiaomi SU7, was only launched in early 2024.

Given the complexity of our automotive landscape, Xiaomi surely needs a dedicated team if the brand wants to bring the SU7, SU7 Ultra, YU7, and the upcoming SkyNomad SUV series into the Malaysian market. While this recruitment notice still does not fully guarantee that Xiaomi will launch its vehicles in Malaysia, at the very least, it proves that things are officially in motion.
