Samsung teases “Ultra” variant of the Galaxy Z Fold with “bigger screen, better cameras”, to launch July 2025?

It looks like Samsung won’t be just launching three, but four foldable smartphones at its upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event in New York, US, that’s rumoured to take place in July 2025. Just yesterday (4th of June), the Korean tech giant teased an Ultra variant of its book-style foldable smartphone, which many are expecting to be called the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Ultra.

As you might guess from its name, this Ultra foldable will be positioned as Samsung’s foldable king, and is expected to launch together with the rumoured Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, and the Z Flip 7 FE.

Samsung’s “Galaxy Z Fold 7 Ultra” to pack bigger screens, better cameras

In its press release, Samsung described the Ultra foldable as a product it has made after listening to its customers’ demands for bigger screens and better cameras.

For context, Samsung’s current foldable model with the largest displays is its Korea- and China-exclusive Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition/Galaxy W25 Fold, which sports an 8″ main inner display and a 6.5″ cover display. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 that’s sold in Malaysia, on the other hand, packs a 7.6″ main display and a 6.3″ cover display.

As you’ve read above, Samsung also mentioned “better cameras”. For this, we sure hope Samsung will at least provide the Ultra variant of its book-style foldable with the camera setup found on its flagship Galaxy S25 Ultra candybar phone.

This includes a 200MP main camera, which the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition already has, along with a 50MP ultra-wide-angle shooter, a 10MP telephoto sensor, and a 50MP periscope telephoto camera. Of course, an even beefier camera setup is always welcome.

Aside from its displays and cameras, Samsung also mentioned that the Ultra foldable phone will also pack Ultra-worthy features like industry-leading hardware, cutting-edge performance, and seamless AI integration. With that said, we should be able to expect premium flagship components like the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chipset.

Thinnest foldable ever from Samsung, or possibly the industry?

From the teaser video Samsung has put out, we can also see that the “Galaxy Fold 7 Ultra” is pretty thin, especially when unfolded. Could it become Samsung’s thinnest foldable ever, or even better, thinnest bi-folding smartphone in the industry?

The current record holder for the thinnest bi-folding smartphone category is Oppo’s Find N5, which measures just 4.21mm when unfolded. Comparatively, Samsung’s own Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition and Z Fold 6 both measure 4.9mm and 5.6mm, respectively.

Samsung pioneered the industry’s first mainstream foldable smartphone in 2019. Since then, however, the competition has caught up, and in some cases, even overtaken it, especially in the design department, with thinner and lighter foldables. That said, it will be interesting to see whether Samsung can turn the tide in its favour with its upcoming foldable lineup.
