According to the latest JPJ data published on Malaysia’s Open Data platform, a total of 1,569 electric vehicles (EV) were registered in the month of October 2024. This is equivalent to 2.09% of total vehicle registrations (75,044) in October.
For the year to date (January to October 2024), a total of 17,403 EVs have been registered, versus 13,301 total EVs registered for 2023.
Although the recent monthly EV registrations appear to be stagnant, the total number of EVs registered this year is expected to exceed the 20,000 mark.

Upcoming EV launches in Malaysia for 2024
The final two months of 2024 would be interesting to watch with the arrival of the BYD Sealion 7, Proton e.MAS7, Zeekr X and Zeekr 009. All four models are now available for booking at their respective dealerships.
The BYD Sealion 7 is essentially a BYD Seal in a practical SUV body and we reckon it would be priced from under RM200,000 if it is offered in a single-motor RWD variant.
The Proton e.MAS7 would be the national carmaker’s first-ever EV which is set to launch in December with an estimated pricing of RM120,000. Meanwhile, the Zeekr X and Zeekr 009, are expected to launch by the end of this month with an indicated maximum pricing of RM180,000 and RM370,000, respectively.
Several brands have also kicked off year-end promos and incentives to boost EV sales. SAIC Motor Malaysia is offering rebates of up to RM26,000 off, and customers can now get an MG4 and MG ZS EV from under RM100,000. Tesla Malaysia has recently announced its EV Switcher Program which provides extra RM10,000 off for the Model 3 and Model Y when you trade-in your petrol or diesel vehicle.
