Prasarana is about to receive another batch of electric buses very soon. This was revealed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during his Budget 2025 speech at the Parlimen earlier today.
According to Anwar, Prasarana has acquired 250 electric buses. The company has confirmed this in a separate media statement and has said that these buses will arrive in stages starting next year.
However, Prasarana didn’t disclose any details regarding these new electric buses today. Hence, the origin of these buses as well as the areas that they will serve are not yet known for now.
This is not the first time that Prasarana’s electric buses have been mentioned in the Budget presentation. During the Budget 2024’s tabling last year, the company was allocated RM600 million to obtain 150 electric buses and build 3 bus depots to serve the LRT3 line.
Truth be told, Prasarana has been operating electric buses for the past several years through its Rapid Bus subsidiary. For example, the company operates the BRT Sunway Line which is the world’s first all-electric BRT system.
Rapid Bus has also previously said that it is planning to electrify 30% of its fleet by 2030 and will be adding over 1,100 electric buses within the next 5 years. Ultimately, the company targets to have a 100% electrified bus fleet by 2037.
