MyAirlines advises passengers to use chargeback for refunds

Those impacted by the MyAirline suspension last year and want a refund for their flight tickets are encouraged to use ‘chargeback’ via their credit card. This is based on a social media post made by the airline on its official social media page.

Ticket refunds were one of two major points that the airline needed to address before they could fly again, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke. The second point was paying the workers’ salaries.

BNM and MAVCOM says start the refund process with the banks

BNM and MAVCOM have also waded in to help the affected passengers. The national financial regulator has said that ‘chargeback’ can be used for ticket purchases made via payment cards (credit or debit) or FPX made through the banks.

Hence, MAVCOM is encouraging the affected passengers to start the refund process from their respective banks. They can also contact MAVCOM directly to get help or be guided through the process, as well as refer to the FAQ, accessible here.

What is ‘chargeback’?

For those who are unaware, ‘chargeback’ is an internationally accepted process used by credit/debit cards issued in Malaysia and overseas. To get a refund, passengers who bought their tickets using either a credit or debit card can begin the compensation process by filling up a “dispute form” that is available from the banks.

Passengers should also email the airline with a refund request, and include a copy of the ticket in the email for record purposes. The email then can be uses as proof that you have submitted to the airline.

For purchases made via travel agents, passengers should contact the travel agent first before starting a refund process with the bank and/or debit/credit card issuer.

How long before I get my money back?

The refund will take some time to process. This is because the crediting process will differ depending on the procedures of the bank or debit/credit card issuer. It could take up to 6 months to finish the refund process. This is why it is advised to start the refund process as soon as possible.

The MyAirline saga seems to continue even going into 2024 and it may just last deep into the year. We would suggest affected customers to start their refund before they miss the window to receive the compensation from the airline.
