50 million Sony Playstation 5 sold around the world so far, but demand is weakening. Here’s why

Sony has confirmed that they have sold over 50 million units of the PlayStation 5 (PS5) console since its launch back in 2020, but the company admits that reaching a critical milestone this year may be an uphill battle.

Sony’s games business was its largest unit by sales and the second-biggest contributor to operating profit after music in the last financial year. The console saw sales and delivery hampered by logistical problems early in its lifecycle, hence the low stock and availability of the console around the world back then.

Now that the platform has stabilised, the PS5 is seeing more attention, as big-ticket games like “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” and “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth” which is launching in February are setting the game world on fire with good-looking graphics and above-par storytelling.

“Given the momentum we’ve had in November and a lot of what we’re seeing in December, just in general we’re feeling very good about sales overall,” said Eric Lempel, senior vice president for global marketing, sales and business operations at Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The biggest threat to home consoles: Cloud and Mobile gaming. As more non-traditional devices come to market with AAA-gaming prowess like the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Asus ROG Ally, more people are questioning the need for typical home consoles, apart from exclusive titles.

Sony is still on track to sell more PS5 in the near future, and with 50 million units sold, it has achieved half of the sales performance of the PS4’s total sales in two years of its life. Pretty impressive.
