NVIDIA and AMD are planning ARM-based CPUs to go against Intel

According to a report from Reuters today, Nvidia has announced its intention to manufacture ARM CPUs for future Microsoft Windows PCs. The new chips may leverage NVIDIA’s lead in the AI space for use in machines running Microsoft’s popular OS.

Based on the same report, the new pursuit by NVIDIA is part of Microsoft’s effort to help chip companies build ARM-based processors for Windows PCs.

Example of NVIDIA Server CPU

Not only NVIDIA is building ARM-based CPUs, but AMD is also in talks to start building CPUs using ARM cores. Both brands may start shipping the ARM-based CPU as early as 2025.

Microsoft has been encouraging the involved chipmakers to build advanced AI features into the CPUs they are designing. The company envisions AI-enhanced software such as its Copilot to become an increasingly important part of using Windows.

If this news is true, NVIDIA and AMD will join Qualcomm which has making ARM-based chips for laptops since 2016. The three companies will go against the giant Intel, which has dominated the PC CPU market for multiple decades, and Apple, which proved that ARM-based chips can be as effective as classic x86 chips.

AMD Ryzen PC CPU

Currently, AMD and Intel are the top manufacturers of consumer x86 chips with Apple clearly leading the way with ARM-based CPUs in their desktop and laptop machines. NVIDIA is already making CPUS, but mainly targeted for for the server market

If Nvidia or AMD can create a system on a chip that can rival the best Intel or Apple offer while offering a good gaming experience without consuming too much power, this could be the turning point in the PC market, with more power-efficient computers made available for purchase by the public.
