Gentari in partnership with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) has launched its first EV charging station in Sarawak located at ICOM Square in Kuching. Equipped with a 180kW DC charger, this location is not only the fastest public EV charger in Kuching but also in Borneo.
The EV chargers were launched in conjunction with Sustainability and Renewable Energy Forum 3.0. This comes after Gentari signed a Strategic Collaboration Agreement with SEB in June 2023 which aims at growing EV adoption in Sarawak through the development of EV charging infrastructure.
These chargers can be activated via the Setel or JomCharge app. From the listing, there’s a 180kW DC Charger with two nozzles and a 50kW unit which has 11kW Type-2 AC nozzle and 50kW DC nozzles for both CCS2 and CHAdeMO. These chargers are currently free to use during the trial period throughout the month of September.
Gentari Deputy CEO Shah Yang Razalli said, “The launch of Gentari’s inaugural EV fast charging station in Kuching in collaboration with Sarawak Energy Berhad marks a pivotal stride in advancing the EV infrastructure across Sarawak. This launch, the first of many to come, signifies substantial progress in bolstering the region’s EV network. By introducing 24/7 fast charging capabilities, we are not only building range confidence but making the transition to EVs an appealing one.”
Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer Datu Haji Sharbini Suhaili said “Sarawak Energy is pleased to introduce Borneo’s fastest public EV Charger in partnership with Gentari. This marks the beginning of our commitment to build a network of EV chargers across Sarawak, connecting major towns and cities starting here in Kuching and crossing the Pan Borneo Highway for an anxiety-free journey.”
In case you’re wondering, the fastest DC charger in Borneo is currently in Brunei. It is a 350kW DC charger installed inside the Porsche Centre Brunei dealership. Gentari x SEB’s charging station at ICOM Square is open to the public, and it is also the 4th public DC fast charging location in Kuching besides Petros SEDC Station (60kW), SRS Automobile (60kW) and BMW Regas Premium Auto (120kW). A new 120kW DC Charger is coming soon at BYD Kuching City One.
