While 5G deployment is currently progressing worldwide, Huawei has announced that it will launch its full set of commercial 5.5G network equipment next year. Huawei’s Director and President of ICT Products & Solutions Yang Chaobin said the company wants the launch to mark the beginning of the 5.5G era for the ICT industry.
According to Huawei, there are currently over 260 commercial 5G network deployments worldwide which currently serve over 1.2 billion users which include 115 million gigabit F5G (Fifth-generation Fibre Network). Although 5G has enabled a variety of breakthrough use cases, Huawei believes that the new services will continue to require stronger 5G network capabilities and 5.5G will be a keystone in 5G evolution that’s fast approaching.
Huawei proposes the concept of the “5.5G Era” which covers not just wireless mobile technologies but an end-to-end solution that covers 5.5G, F5.5G and Net5.5G. Not only it will protect the operator’s previous 5G investments but it will improve network performance by 10 times. According to the tech giant, 5.5G Era would unlock 10-gigabit peak download speeds and gigabit peak uplink speeds to meet increasingly diverse service requirements. In addition, it will encourage new technologies such as passive IoT which will unlock 100 billion IoT connections.
To advocate for end-to-end 5.5G solutions, Huawei says it has been working with multiple players on R&D and verification of key 5.5G technologies. This includes the verification process for extremely large antenna array (ELAA) which underpins 10-gigabit downlink, flexible spectrum access which enables gigabit uplink and passive IoT which can enable 100 billion IoT connections. On fibre, 50G PON is said to be another key technology that can enable 10-gigabit speeds for F5.5G ultra-broadband networks and it is expected to be used in homes, campuses and productions in the future.
Besides 5.5G wireless and optical access networks, Yang said Huawei is also working on applying AI-native technologies to the 5.5G core to enhance network capabilities and availability. He said this will allow AI capabilities to be delivered to the very ends of the network to serve numerous industries. Net5.5G is said to promise 10-gigabit access, ultra-broadband transport and microsecond-level latency over AI networks. This aims to serve as a next-generation network foundation for industrial digitalisation by providing high-quality network access.
While 6G is still in its early stages of development, 5.5G aims to offer a tenfold improvement in network performance and capabilities over the current 5G.
