Malaysia has plenty of mobile postpaid and prepaid plans to keep you connected while on the go. However, when you’re at home, nothing beats the performance and stability of fibre broadband. Besides having faster broadband speeds, fibre broadband also offers true unlimited internet without annoying Fair Usage Policy data caps that you get with mobile plans.
According to the latest JENDELA report, Malaysia has over 7.74 million fibre-passed premises and this means more Malaysians are able to get access to fibre broadband. Besides TM Unifi, there are now more fibre options available from Time, Maxis, CelcomDigi, Astro and even U Mobile.
Whether you’re looking for a basic fibre plan, the best value for high-speed or the best option with content bundle, we’ve got you covered in our Best Fibre Broadband Plan guide.
Unifi Fibre Broadband
Of course, we can’t talk about broadband without mentioning Telekom Malaysia. TM has the widest fibre broadband network in the country and its Unifi brand now offers gigabit speeds of up to 2Gbps.
The base 30Mbps plan costs RM89/month while 100Mbps is going for RM129/month. If you need even faster speeds, Unifi offers 300Mbps at RM159/month, 500Mbps at RM209/month and 800Mbps at RM299/month.
If that’s not enough, the 1Gbps plan is offered with an introductory price of RM349/month while the 2Gbps plan is going for RM399/month. However, take note that the 2Gbps plan is based on an aggregated offering. Long story short, essentially the plan offers two 1Gbps connections.
As shown above, the provided network router has several LAN ports and each port can only deliver a maximum of 1Gbps. So that means if you run a speed test, you can only get a maximum of 1Gbps even on the network cable.
So think of it as having two dedicated 1Gbps bandwidths. So you can have one 1Gbps for downstairs and another 1Gbps upstairs or directly for your gaming PC. So instead of one fast 2Gbps pipe, you get two pipes at 1Gbps each. If you look around, most broadband providers in Singapore are also doing the same thing for its 2Gbps plan.
The Unifi plans we mentioned here are mostly standalone fibre plans without any extra add-ons like Unifi TV. However, the two Gigabit plans such as the 1Gbps and 2Gbps come with Unifi TV Pack worth RM60 already included.
Time Fibre Broadband
Next is Time Broadband which seems to be everyone’s favourite because they offer high-speed at a much lower price. They are also the first to offer 2Gbps fibre broadband, and I mean true 2Gbps, unlike TM’s aggregated offering. This is made possible with its commercial 10G PON deployment and Time is the first to do so in Malaysia.
The base 100Mbps plan from TIME costs RM99/month which is fantastic value for money. And the next option is 500Mbps for RM139/month, that’s RM40 extra to get 5x speed. For those with the need for speed, Time offers 1Gbps for RM199/month and 2Gbps for RM379/month.
The only issue with Time is the network isn’t as extensive as TM, but they have been expanding its coverage. And believe it or not, they do cover landed properties as well.
Maxis Home Fibre Broadband
Next on our list is Maxis which mostly taps on TM’s HSBB network but they also have their own fibre network in selected areas.
The base 30Mbps home fibre plan is priced at RM89/month, which is similar to Unifi but the upload speed is symmetrical at 30Mbps and it comes with a WiFi 6 router for the base plan. The next options are 100Mbps at RM129/month, 300Mbps at RM149/month, 500Mbps at RM219/month and 800Mbsp at RM299/month.
If you’re a Maxis Postpaid customer, you can also enjoy unlimited quota on your postpaid and supplementary lines if you sign up for the fibre broadband as a bundle. So that’s unlimited data for your home and also on the go for all of your Maxis postpaid lines in the family.
Recently Maxis has also started offering 1Gbps for only RM189/month. However, it is only for business users and if your premise is located within Maxis’ own build fibre network. Which is a shame, because that’s cheaper than Time’s 1Gbps plan.
CelcomDigi Fibre
Both Celcom and Digi have recently “unified” their fibre broadband offering. If you’re not a user of an eligible Celcom or Digi postpaid plan, they are offering 50Mbps for RM90/month and 100Mbps for RM130/month. And the highest 300Mbps option is going for RM150/month. As shown here, they are currently doing a promo, and you can enjoy the 300Mbps for only RM75/month for the first six months.
However, if you’re an existing Celcom or Digi Postpaid customer with a minimum monthly commitment of RM90/month, you can enjoy extra rebates and that means cheaper broadband. The 50Mbps can be yours for RM75/month while the 100Mbps plan is going for only RM90/month. What’s more interesting is that you can get 300Mbps for only RM100/month, which is pretty good value for money. That’s like 3x the speed for about the same price as Time’s 100Mbps plan.
Astro Fibre
If you think of Astro, you might think of Satellite TV. Well, not anymore. Astro is now becoming a digital content aggregator and they also trying to be a major internet service provider in the country. Among all the telcos, this is probably a proper convergence of connectivity and content. And we all know Astro has better content offering than Unifi TV.
For the standalone fibre broadband plan, Astro is offering 50Mbps for RM99/month and 100Mbps for RM129/month. For the higher plans, they are pretty good value for a provider that rides on TM’s HSBB network. The 500Mbps plan is going for RM189/month and 800Mbps going for RM249/month.
If you need to add Astro TV content, you can add on from as little as RM59.99/month or add RM99.99/month to watch Astro’s live sports content. On top of that you also get extra rebates for more savings.
So if you need broadband and sports content, you can get 50Mbps Astro Fibre plus Astro Sports Pack for RM169.99/month.
U Mobile Fibre Broadband
In case you didn’t know, U Mobile is also providing fibre broadband and they are tapping on both TNB’s Allo and Time’s fibre network. There are only three options, 100Mbps at RM129/month, 500Mbps at RM199/month and 1Gbps for RM299/month.
Coverage is quite limited and the price is just so-so.
Recap of all fibre broadband plans
For a quick comparison, here’s the list of all standalone home fibre broadband plans. We’ve split the list according to the download speed range and we included the upload speed, fixed telephone line for voice calls, bundled router type and optional extras.
RM69 Pakej Perpaduan
In case you missed it, the government has recently announced the RM69 Pakej Perpaduan fibre broadband plan which is aimed at helping low-income groups. Available for B40, persons with disabilities (OKU), senior citizens and veterans, eligible individuals can get 30Mbps fibre broadband for only RM69 per month on a 24-month contract.
At the moment, YTL Broadband, Unifi and CelcomDigi have revealed their 30Mbps for RM69/month offer. Meanwhile, Time is offering 100Mbps for RM69/month at selected PPR (public housing) projects. For those who need even faster speeds, Time is also offering 500Mbps for RM119/month and 1Gbps for RM179/month.
Recommended Fibre Plans
Fibre Broadband only
If you need a no-nonsense fibre broadband plan, Time’s 100Mbps for RM99/month is a no-brainer provided that it is available at your residence. Besides being affordable, it also offers a symmetrical 100Mbps upload speed. That means you can upload stuff as fast as you download, unlike other entry-level fibre plans with slower 10Mbps or 30Mbps upload. If you need to go faster, Time’s 500Mbps just costs RM139/month.
If you’re staying outside of Time’s fibre coverage, Maxis 30Mbps fibre is probably the plan to go for RM89/month as it also gets 30Mbps upload. Alternatively, you can get 50Mbps from CelcomDigi for RM90/month, but the upload speed is slightly lower at 20Mbps.
If you need even faster speeds, the best value would be Astro’s 500Mbps plan for only RM189/month. That’s more affordable than what you get from Maxis and TM which are priced above RM200/month.
Fibre + Mobile Postpaid Bundle
If you’re looking for a fibre and postpaid plan combo, I would say the best option is from Celcom and Digi. The 300Mbps plan is going for only RM100/month. That’s a pretty good value.
But if you have loads of supplementary lines and most of your family members need loads of data, Maxis’s Fibre + Mobile offering is worth looking at because all of your Maxis Postpaid lines including the RM48 supplementary sublines will automatically get unlimited quota.
Fibre + Content Bundle
If you need Fibre and content, Astro is the way to go. They offer the best of both worlds and you can get 50Mbps fibre + Movie pack for RM164.99 per month or 50Mbps fibre + Sports pack for RM169.99 per month.
Fastest Uploads
For all you content creators that need faster uploads, Unifi’s 2Gbps plan at RM399/month offers uploads up to 1Gbps. That’s higher than Time broadband which only offers up to 500Mbps for both 1Gbps and 2Gbps options.
Things to take note of
Before signing up for a fibre broadband plan, do note that all of them by default will lock you down to a 24-month contract. So if you’re staying in a rented accommodation, beware that there will be penalties if you cancel your fibre broadband service before the 24-month contract is over.
Previously, the penalty for early termination is a one-off RM300 or RM500 fee. These days, a lot of providers are making you pay the full subscription fee for the remaining months of the contract. So if your plan is RM100 per month and have 10 months remaining, you will have to pay RM1,000.
What’s the point of cancelling then if customers are required to pay in full? We have highlighted these concerns to the MCMC previously and they responded by saying that customers are responsible for accepting the provider’s T&C.
So before signing up, do check with the sales representative so that you are absolutely clear about what you’re getting yourself into when you sign a 24-month contract.
