According to the president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan, the global PlayStation 5 shortage is officially over. So it would soon be easier for you to get your hands on a brand-new PS5.
At the Consumer Electronics Show 2023 a couple days ago, Ryan said that the PS5’s supply “improved towards the end of last year”. He also explained that “starting from this point forward”, people should have “a much easier time finding one at retailers globally”.
“I’m happy to share that December was the biggest month ever for PS5 console sales, and that we’ve now sold more than 30 million units through to consumers worldwide,” continued Ryan.
When the PS5 was first launched in 2020, amidst a global pandemic, it was notoriously difficult to get your hands on the sought after console. It was so difficult, in fact, that there were several cases of scammers cheating more than 200 victims of PlayStation 5 sales.
In August, the console was also hit with RM200 price hike, with both variants now priced over RM2,000. Since last year, the PlayStation 5 with Blu-Ray disc drive and 825GB SSD is priced at RM2,499.
Currently, it is still difficult to find the console for sale at a decent price. One listing on Shopee priced it from RM3,000 plus. There’s no information on when the consoles would be readily available globally yet—but hopefully they’ll give us more updates soon.
