Yes 5G claims to have the most number of Samsung phones supported for 5G

Malaysia currently has a total of 5 telcos offering commercial 5G services but not all telcos are the same when it comes to supported devices. Yes 5G, which is the first to offer 5G services since December last year has claimed to have the most number of Samsung Galaxy phones that can connect to 5G.

At the moment, Yes 5G supports a total of 27 Samsung Galaxy devices which include the foldable Galaxy Z series, Galaxy S series as well as the Galaxy M and Galaxy A. Users on the Galaxy Note 20 5G and Note 20 Ultra 5G as well as the Galaxy Tab S8 series cellular models are able to connect to Yes 5G as well.

As a comparison, Unifi Mobile, the 2nd telco to offer 5G in Malaysia currently supports 17 Samsung Galaxy models as listed below:

  • Samsung Galaxy A22 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy A23 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy A42 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy A53 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy A73 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy M23 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy Note20 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy S21+ 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy S22 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy S22+ 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4

When Unifi Mobile first rolled out 5G on 31st October, we couldn’t get the SIM to connect to 5G on our Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G despite it being supported with Yes 5G. Fortunately, we got it connected to Unifi Mobile 5G after the device received Samsung’s One UI 5 update with Android 13.

It is worth highlighting that other telcos such as Celcom, Digi and U Mobile are merely redirecting users to DNB’s supported device list which isn’t a true indication that the device will work with the specific telco. U Mobile used to have its own supported device list but it was replaced with a link to DNB’s website.

Several 5G devices especially from Samsung and Apple would require a software update and it is dependent on the arrangement between the telco and the device manufacturer. Since Yes 5G rolled out 5G services almost a year ahead of the rest, it is not surprising that it has the most supported 5G devices and with the most optimised 5G experience among the 5 players.
