Tony Fernandes says drones will soon be able to send you the “weird looking” AirAsia nasi lemak ice cream

Air Asia‘s CEO Tony Fernandes remarked on a TikTok post that customers will soon be able to get some of their nasi lemak ice cream delivered via drone. According to Fernandes, you’d be able to get ice cream delivered to your doorstep “in ten minutes” after ordering.

Replying to @jake’s neighbor Changing delivery like we changed flying. Wouldn’t it be cool to receive your @santan Nasi Lemak Ice Cream by drone? #NasiLemakIceCream #gulamelakaboba #icecream #blackpink

AirAsia first announced their nasi lemak ice cream in 2020, but I guess it was taken off the shelves at some point after—as it’s apparently been re-introduced recently according to Fernandez’ TikTok post. If it’s anything like the Marry Brown nasi lemak ice cream we’ve tried, we would pass. The CEO also called the product “weird” looking.

The ice cream that was introduced two years ago was due to a partnership with local ice-cream maker, Crème De La Crème. It replicates the taste profile of Santan’s Pak Nasser’s Nasi Lemak sambal by using the same chilli paste. The sambal is then swirled into a creamy coconut-based ice cream topped with crunchy ikan bilis and peanuts.

Besides the nasi lemak ice cream, Fernandez also said that they would be delivering a “Gula Melaka Boba” ice cream—which seems like a new item. That flavour seems tamer, and sounds kind of delicious.

In AirAsia’s press release, each ice cream serving is priced at RM4.50 each. But we don’t know how much it would be for one to be sent to our doorstep. In fact, we don’t really know when their drones would be able to do it in the first place.

In January this year, AirAsia announced that they are the first in Malaysia to conduct remote drone pilot training. Group chief executive officer of AirAsia Aviation Ltd Bo Lingam said the move to train drone pilots would drive drone delivery.

The drone deliveries, whenever that will happen, will be a game-changer as customers could receive their food and packages at fast speeds. We also don’t know if AirAsia is planning on doing just purely ice cream deliveries, but at least with drones, the ice creams won’t have much time to melt under the Malaysian heat.

AirAsia also informed me that in conjunction with Merdeka, Santan is giving away its non-ice cream Nasi Lemak On-The-Go for free. All you need to do is to visit one of the 7 AirAsia’s Santan outlets listed below on 31 August 2022, and shout “I LOVE NASI LEMAK!” 3 times!
