Sony has a new Xperia smartphone launching this 1 Sept, is this the Xperia 5 IV?

Back in May of this year, Sony announced their latest smartphones for the year, the flagship Sony Xperia 1 IV and the midrange Xperia 10 IV. Curiously though, there was no mention of a new Xperia 5 device, which is normally their more affordable flagship option.

However, we may be seeing it soon enough, as Sony has revealed yet another event happening this 1 Sept, at 3pm Malaysian time. You’ll be able to watch it live on the Sony Xperia YouTube channel.

There’s already been rumours of a Sony Xperia 5 IV for some time now, with the latest news around it being a recent US FCC certification for it. The FCC listing notes that it would be slightly smaller than last year’s Xperia 5 III, which a 6.04-inch display—something compact smartphone lovers might be a fan of. We can also expect to see wireless charging, NFC connectivity and a 3.5mm audio jack.

In the meantime, if you want to check out the Xperia 1 IV and the Xperia 10 IV, you can read out previous coverage of the two phones here and here. They start at RM6,099 and RM2,099 respectively, with the former netting headlines for being one of the only smartphones out there with a true optical zoom lens.
