Having generated an unbelievable amount of hype over the past few months with the Phone (1), Nothing is gearing up for its next product launch, as teased in the Nothing Series #5 video released on Thursday.
The near-19-minute film mainly focuses on the Phone (1) launch events in Basel, London, Cologne and even here in Kuala Lumpur. But at the beginning, we see Nothing’s design head Tom Howard rummaging the company’s Stockholm office, finally stumbling upon a pixelated object that is “not the Ear (1).” This suggests the new device, which Nothing is “about to launch,” is another pair of earbuds.
As with everything in the tech world, this revelation does not come entirely out of nowhere. On the same day the video above was released, Indian tech influencer Mukul Sharma tweeted that Nothing is working on not one, but two wireless earbuds that are already undergoing internal testing in Europe and Asia.
Mukul said the two devices were the Phone (1) Stick (your guess about what the ‘Stick’ means is as good as mine) that he had leaked in June, as well as the Phone (2) – the latter being the true successor to Nothing’s first product. He added in another tweet that the earbuds carried the model numbers B155 and B157, both already achieving SGS Fimko certification in Switzerland; B157 has also received India’s BIS certification.
We still have no idea what these devices look like, but in the aforementioned video, Nothing’s design boss Howard confirmed the next product will continue to be transparent, adding that the company derives plenty of inspiration from the cosmetics industry. He added that Nothing wanted to make a case and product that was “a little bit more refined.” Hopefully it will have a more durable case and be more reliable than what Rory found the Ear (1) to be.
