Lights are back on in Malaysia after major power outage

Following a major power outage across Klang Valley and other cities around Peninsula Malaysia, Tenaga Nasional Berhad has now issued a statement confirming that power is back for all affected Malaysians.

According to TNB, the power outage began around 12.39pm today following an issue with the Yong Peng North Transmission Main Intake (PMU Yong Peng) station in Yong Peng, Johor. This let to a 2.2GW loss in electricity, affecting up to 10% of the electricity supply in Peninsular Malaysia. TNB then began work in rectifying the issue, with some Malaysians affected getting power back as early as 20 minutes after the outage. The power outage was fully resolved by 3.02pm.

A PMU by the way is the interconnection point between the 132kV or 275kV grid to the distribution system. Essentially, it’s where electricity goes after being moved out from the powerstations along the National Grid, and it’s at the PMU where it gets converted to a lower voltage to be sent out to smaller distribution stations and substations before being used by you at your home, office and so forth.

TNB has since also apologised for the abrupt blackout, and affected users can get in touch with TNB at their TNB Careline (15454). The blackout also caused multiple other services to go down too, with the likes of RapidKL, Unifi and Digi all having interruptions in their service.
