Ericsson sets up distribution centre at KLIA to provide faster support for 5G networks in Asia Pacific

Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson has commissioned a new facility at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) which will expand its regional distribution capacity to support 5G networks. It puts Malaysia in a strategic location to support smooth operations of customer networks in the Asia Pacific region.

According to Ericsson, the distribution centre will serve more than 20 countries and it will allow Ericsson to provide faster maintenance and support with minimal downtime for customers and end-users. The new facility will complement their Maintenance and Support Centre in Malaysia, and it would ensure smooth running and maintenance of telco networks including 5G with quick access to hardware inventory and spare parts.

David Hägerbro, Head of Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka & Bangladesh, said: “Malaysia is a very strategic location for Ericsson and the new distribution facility strengthens our commitment here, while creating both direct and indirect employment opportunities for Malaysians.

“The capability to respond, deliver quickly and ensure minimal downtime for mobile network operators and end users places Malaysia in a very strategic position to serve the telecommunications industry, Hägerbro adds.

“This is especially critical as countries in the region begin accelerating their 5G commercial rollouts while also strengthening their 4G deployment.”

Ericsson’s distribution centre covers an area of 68,000 sq ft and it’s located at the Cainiao Aeropolis Electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP) Hub at KLIA’s Cargo Village and operated by CEVA Logistics. Cainiao Aeropolis was launched last year and it’s a 70:30 joint venture between Malaysia Airports & Cainiao HK (logistics arm of Alibaba Group). It’s also Alibaba Group’s 1st eWTP outside of China.

Besides Malaysia, Ericsson has five distribution centres for global hardware inventory management in Dallas, Dubai, Netherlands, and Taiwan.
