iPhone 14 Pro: Hate punch holes in your display? Apple may be giving you two of them instead

If you’ve been holding on to your old iPhone 8 in hopes that maybe one day Apple will finally release an iPhone without a notch at the top, you might be a little intrigued but also kind of disappointed to hear that Cupertino is looking at keeping the notch for its non-Pro iPhone 14 models yet ditch it on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

This new detail comes thanks to leaked images showing the purported front display panel of the upcoming iPhone 14 lineup. There’s four models on show, which is the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max; this also further confirms the rumour that Apple is dropping the iPhone Mini from their product stack.

That being said, Apple may be removing the notch off the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, but you’ll still be getting an i-shaped punch hole cutout on the display, presumably for the front camera and Face ID sensors. In fact, if you look closely, it seems as though despite Apple taking away the notch, the camera and sensor hardware itself is in the same place as before. Another notable change with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max display panel is a thinner bezel than previous generation Pro and Pro Max models. It’s also now a slightly taller aspect ratio at 20:9, compared to their usual 19.5:9 aspect ratio.

Other than that, Mac Otakara also got their hands on 3D mock-ups of the upcoming iPhone 14 series. They claim that the regular iPhone 14 will have a slightly larger camera bump compared to the iPhone 13, as well as a slight tweak to the overall shape of the corner edges. The iPhone 14 Max meanwhile fit perfectly in a iPhone 13 Pro Max case, but of course the camera bump was significantly smaller than the Pro Max’s camera bump. As for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, both 3D mock-ups seem to have significantly thicker camera bumps than the current iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max models.

It does go without saying of course that these all remain rumours and speculation for now and that you should take them with a pinch of salt. We are getting closer and closer to the iPhone 14’s expected launch sometime in September though, and we’ll just need to wait until then to know for sure what Apple has up their sleeve.
