MoonSwatch staining your wrist? Here’s what Swatch has to say

Swatch and Omega recently collaborated on a watch series called the MoonSwatch which triggered a consumer frenzy all over the world. A few days after it went on sale, reports of the Mission to Neptune variant showing signs of discolouration have surfaced.

A reddit user shared a picture of a blue stain on his wrist after wearing the Mission to Neptune watch. Besides expressing his disappointment, he did not elaborate further on what he did prior to realising the stain on his wrist.

However, another user on Facebook also shared a similar experience with more details. According to him, he noticed the discolouration after the watch was exposed to a hot and humid environment during a party. On a side note, he also mentioned that the crystal covering the watch face “had scratches all over it.” Now, he doesn’t show the front of the watch, so I can’t evaluate the condition for myself, but I digress.

News outlet Bloomberg reached out to Swatch for comments regarding this matter. A spokesperson for the watch company said “high amount of pigments used to achieve a strong colour result” is the cause for the blue stain. The spokesperson also assured that the blue pigment used is not hazardous to the skin, non-toxic and is completely harmless. Moreover, the blue stain is not permanent and will eventually come off.

As for concerns about the blue colour fading from losing its dye, the company says owners have nothing to worry about as the colour will remain unchanged. Swatch claims that this is a “very, very rare experience,” but a couple of YouTube users who have the watch managed to recreate the discolouration with relative ease. Just using an earbud soaked with water was enough to stain the cotton tip, blue.

Therefore, you might have a higher chance of experiencing this issue if you have sweaty skin. Swatch’s quality management team at its production facilities have been notified and necessary measures have already been taken, says the company. So, it is likely that the next batch of Mission to Neptune watches might not present any discolouration, but we’ll have to wait and see.

For owners of the current batch, it looks like there will not be any recalls or compensations offered based on Swatch’s tone on this matter.

Normally, a Swatch watch would fly under the radar, but since the MoonSwatch also carries both the Omega and Speedmaster name, it prompted a craze among fans and consumer alike. The MoonSwatch collection is comprised of a series of designs inspired by the planets in our solar system. Widely referred to as the cheapest Omega you can buy at RM1,065, it was sold out almost immediately all over the globe.

Although the watch is not part of a limited-edition collection, it is currently being sold on eBay for as much as 30 times its original price!

But why does slapping the Omega and Speedmaster name onto the MoonSwatch makes it so desirable? Well, my two best buds, Rory and Ray explain just exactly why.
