AirAsia Super Plus: Here’s what you need to know about its unlimited flight pass

If you’ve missed the announcement, AirAsia has launched its new unlimited subscription service—Super Plus. The service—which costs RM639 a year—offers unlimited flights with COVID-19 insurance coverage and free food delivery for one year. So, what’s the catch, and what do we need to know about it before we spend that RM639?

What’s the gist?

The Super+ pass a little bit similar to its previous passes, like the ASEAN Unlimited Pass which “lets you travel as many times as you want within Malaysia and ASEAN countries for RM599”. However, for RM639/year, the pass also comes with Covid coverage for flights with a USD 35 payout, free delivery on food orders, and more “coming soon”.

There are only 200,000 subscriptions of the Super+ pass available. The promo ends on 2 April 2022, or when all passes are snapped up—whichever comes first. Besides Malaysia, the pass is also launched in other ASEAN regions including Indonesia (IDR 2.3M), the Philippines (PHP 6,599), and Thailand (THB4,999).

Each Super+ pass will only be assigned to only one person owning an AirAsia Member account—and it’s open for purchase to all members residing in Malaysia (or an eligible ASEAN country). This includes minors who are below the age of 18, however, they may only purchase the pass under the supervision of an adult.

How do I purchase the Super+ pass?

You can either sign up for AirAsia’s Super+ pass through its app (iOS, Android) or on its website. If you’re signing up through the app, make sure you’ve updated it to its latest version before proceeding and logging in/signing up. You can find the Super+ pass button by pressing Account on the bottom right. The button will take you to a page where you can read through a gist of what the pass offers, as well as its terms and conditions and FAQ section.

Press ‘Proceed to Payment’ and type in your payment details. You can choose to either pay for the amount with a credit card (Visa or Mastercard), online banking, or Union Pay. Once you’ve confirmed your details, you’re basically all set! You can then start using your Super+ pass.

If you’re signing up using AirAsia’s website on your desktop, log in/sign up to your AirAsia account before proceeding to purchase the pass. It works basically the same way as if you’re buying it through the app—you can read their FAQs and Terms and Conditions there too.

Unlimited “free” flights?

So, with AirAsia, you’d know that even if something is “cheap” or “free”, it often comes with extra surcharges—mostly unavoidable. For the AirAsia Super+ pass, it isn’t any different. Similar to previous passes, the unlimited free flights only cover the base fare.

You can select “Flights” in your Super+ pass subscription dashboard, where you will be taken to a page with a newly generated promo code that you can use to claim for “free flights”. Press Redeem, and then you can choose your destination, depart date, return dates, how many passengers (you can only claim the promo for one passenger, though), and select whether or not you want to redeem BIG points.

Recently, AirAsia posted an availability tracker on its Facebook page. So far, according to AirAsia, there are plenty of available dates for flights to and from the ASEAN region.

AirAsia Super+ holders can redeem free domestic and ASEAN flights on AirAsia AK, FD, Z2, and QZ with a travel period from 11 April 2022 until 10 April 2023. Only select flights are marked 100% off, and do note that all flights require an advance purchase of 14 days. As usual, there are blackout dates—so you would need to plan ahead for weekday trips instead of some weekends or public holidays.

When choosing your flights, there will be a list you can choose from based on time as well as the amount you need to pay (if the flights themselves are free, you may be charged service charges, fuel surcharge, and departure levy). After choosing your flights, you can select if you want add-ons—which will…add on to the cost of the total bill later. This includes the Value Pack bundle, Premium Flex bundle, flight and hotel bundle, baggage options, seat picking, value meals, and travel protection.

You will also be required to read and fulfill the travel requirements based on where you’re flying off to. You’ll need to prepare a vaccination certificate or COVID-19 test result or any other travel requirement, make sure you’re not experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, and are required to refrain from flying if you’ve had contact with a person with a confirmed or suspected case of COVID-19. Do also check the latest and verified information before you travel.

After that, there’s an option for you to see what you’re charged with as added fees. For example, traveling to and from KL and Bali in August 2022 would mean that I won’t be charged the flight fees. However, I would be charged with the passenger service charge, regulatory service charge, fuel surcharge, and Department Levy. The total for my return flight is RM218—if I don’t add on any other things like meals, travel insurance and baggage options of more than 7KG.

Pass holders are only allowed to make a maximum of two flight trips on the same day, and no multiple multiple booking of flights are allowed to be made for the same departure location on the very same day. You’re also allowed up to three no-shows.

Unlike the previous passes, you are allowed to change your flight via My Bookings. However, any change of flight will be subject to flight availability and a fare difference fee may apply.

Additionally, in if your scheduled flight is either canceled, terminated, diverted, postponed, rescheduled, or delayed, AirAsia could either carry you on another earliest AirAsia flight with space availability without additional charges—or make a refund in for form of credit to your AirAsia account. How does COVID Coverage work?

The Super+ pass includes a bundled pre-departure Covid Coverage insurance protection plan, which covers unavoidable flight cancellation for your redeemed flights. But what IS the Covid Coverage protection plan?

Basically, you will be entitled to a lump sum maximum amount of RM150 should the following insured event occurs which results in the cancellation of your redeemed Flights:

• If the pass holder is infected with COVID-19 seven days prior to the departure date
• If the pass holder has a disability that results in—death, permanent disability, or hospital admission occurring to the pass holders, pass holders’ family members, or pass holder’s travel companion or fourteen days prior to the departure date
• Occurrence of a fire or natural disaster to pass holders’ residence or the country of destination
• Occurrence of some events
• Natural disasters, including but not limited to, volcanic eruptions, floods, earthquakes, tsunami, hurricanes or wildfire occurring in the country of destination

You may only claim the compensation for any flight cancellations once within a fifteen days period for any event mentioned above. For instance, if you have booked several flight tickets within a fifteen-day period and are confirmed to be COVID-19 positive seven days prior to the flight departure, you will be entitled to claim the compensation once only.

You’re also covered for Travel Personal Accident Benefit, where you will be compensated in case of an accident during the trip, coverage up to 30 days for Accidental Death, and Permanent Disablement up to RM5,000. To make your claim, contact them through email (enquiry@tuneprotect.com) within 30 days of you becoming aware of an incident or loss leading to a claim. There’s no information regarding if the insurance covers additional expenses like extra hotel stars for quarantine.

Free food delivery

Super+ subscribers can also enjoy free delivery for AirAsia Food. But… there’s also a catch there—you have to spend a minimum spend of RM15. Through the Super+ pass dashboard, you can already start ordering food with “free delivery”. Upon checkout, the delivery fee should be waived. AirAsia Food is currently available in Klang Valley, Kota Kinabalu, Penang, Seremban, Melaka, Johor Bahru, Ipoh, Kota Bharu, Kuching, and Miri.

If you already have the pass, using it to get free deliveries for food orders is a great perk—especially if you use food delivery services often.

For RM639 a year, is the AirAsia Super+ pass worth it? Well, it is a little more than the previous RM599 ASEAN pass—but you’d get more with your money if you compare the two. You’d get free food deliveries, COVID-19 Coverage and you’re even allowed to change flight dates depending on the situation—things that the ASEAN pass did not offer.

But if you’re wondering about the state of last year’s RM599 ASEAN pass, AirAsia SuperApp CEO Amanda Woo said the validity for the ASEAN pass has been extended and passengers can proceed to book their domestic and international flights until June 2022. AirAsia also has plans to launch similar Super+ passes for Hotels, rides, and more.

AirAsia has begun phasing out physical check-in counters and guests are advised to check-in through the app or website for a digital eBoarding pass. Unlike typical airlines which open check-ins 48 hours ahead of departure, you can check-in on AirAsia 14 days before the flight.
