Oppo’s insane 240W SuperVOOC technology fully charges a 4,500mAh battery in just 9 minutes

Six years ago, Oppo showed off its first version of SuperVOOC that could fully charge a phone with a 2,500mAh battery in just 15 minutes. At this year’s MWC 2022, Oppo claims to set a new fast-charging record with its new 240W SuperVOOC flash charge technology. The new fast charging technology can fully charge a phone from 0-100% in just 9 minutes.

According to Oppo, they are pushing the limits of high-power flash charge due to the growing demand for high-efficiency charging solutions in the era of 5G connectivity. It claimed that the 240W SuperVOOC can charge a 4,500mAh battery in 9 minutes with an output of 24V/10A via a USB-C interface. If you’re in a rush, the 240W charger can push 0-50% charge in just 3 minutes and 28 seconds which is insane.

The high-speed charge is achieved using three charge pumps and the power delivered to the handset is then converted to 10V/24A. Without sharing further technical details, Oppo says its charging technology conforms to existing device specifications and has been tested for heat dissipation, to ensure optimal efficiency and enhanced safety. It added that the battery’s leading discharge rating will allow the device to support the maximum 240W charging rate.

To minimise any potential safety hazards and risks, the 240W SuperVOOC technology adopts five safety protection measures and it includes a customised control chip that manages the voltage, current and temperature for a safe charging solution. There’s also a customised battery safety monitoring chip that checks if the battery is damaged by external forces when in use. It also uses 13 temperature sensors within the phone for temperature protection and to reduce the chance of overheating.

At the moment, this appears to be a technology showcase and it isn’t clear when it will be commercially available. According to Oppo, they are still working on improving the battery life and energy density for their charging technology. Oppo’s latest Find X5 Pro flagship currently supports 80W SuperVOOC fast charging that can push 50% charge in just 12 minutes. The first device to offer 50W SuperVOOC was the Oppo Find X Lamborghini Edition, and it was introduced two years after Oppo’s showcase in MWC 2016.

It is worth pointing out that this isn’t the first time a smartphone maker has pushed at least 200W fast charging on a smartphone. Xiaomi had shown off its 200W HyperCharge tech last year that could fully charge a 4,000mAh battery in just 8 minutes. However, Xiaomi is currently only pushing 120W fast charging for its current flagship smartphones like the Xiaomi 12 and the Xiaomi 11T Pro. On the Xiaomi 12, it takes 18 minutes to fully charge the 4,500mAh battery in the fastest mode or 24 minutes in a “cooler mode”.
